My main memory of the Mage's Guild in Oblivion is that one woman whose voice acting was always so mundane and resigned all kinds of sad because you almost drowned getting the cursed ring.

It was a fun quest line. Not quite the Thieve's Guild, but a fun one. And I suppose, of all of them, it did make you feel most like you earned it rather than kind of fell into it.

The Fighter's Guild was the worst one in that game.

The Mage quest line in Oblivion wasn't very awesome. Though, that was largely due to the fact that generic enemies scaled up to your level while the unique bosses did not. When I fought Mannimarco, he died in approximately 5 seconds so it was pretty anticlimactic.

That was a problem in overall design, not really in the quest design. The quest design was great; it took quite awhile for the guild to notice things were going wrong, you were sent on several fact-finding missions, and while you did that Mannimarco wiped out the guild where he could, and it wasn't until the end of a long quest line that you went to face him, and the Guild increased your position and title a few times along the way. I think there were like 16-20 missions or so, so by the end when you finally made archmage it felt like you earned it.

In Skyrim, you become an apprentice, and three days later "Well, you deserve to be Archmage because the Psijic Order, who only ever talk to you, say so!"

Bhruic wrote on Feb 10, 2013, 23:34:
Even worse, you can do it with almost no ability to cast spells. You'd think the requirements to be Archmage would include some sort of demonstration of spell casting proficiency. But, then, the thief questline doesn't really require you to steal anything either. At least as an assassin they actually ask you to kill people.

Yeah, it's quite amusing how you can become Archmage even though you have no ability to cast even Adept level spells. (My highest magic ability at the time was 44 in Destruction.) Then again, the only spell you ever see Savos Aren cast is a Novice level Lightning Hands spell, so...

The Thieves guild actually does require you to steal stuff. Mostly in the radiant quests to restore the guild, but in several of the main missions you have to infiltrate and steal things. (GoldenGlow estate you have to find the sales order in the safe, and then later you have to infiltrate a Dwemer museum to steal this guy's Falmer translations.)

Played Skyrim last night for about 5 hours - only level 26 and it says I have only done 8 core missions in 60 hours. haahahahah I have a lot of fun clearing out stuff, selling, crafting, talking with peeps, exploring....hell, I dont' even need a main storyline! hahahah
Generally thats the way I play games like that too. Thats how ppl like us get hundreds of hours in those kinda games
Same here, to bad Bethesda doesn't take a lesson from Dead Island, Coop! Party2

Btw thanks for the tip about Unread Books, it will make a great addition. I also use a skill book mod which offers a choice whether to read now or save it.

Oh god, I must have played 16 hours of Skyrim this weekend. Love Dragonborn. I loved the first expansion too, so maybe I'm easy to please. I'm a huge ES fan and love the lore.

I didn't like Dead Island coop... With 3-4 people, the game is no longer survival horror, it's just pure action and you're constantly overpowered. It's kinda boring. Single player was awesome. A bit too much filler though.

I picked up Skyrim in a sale at the end of November from Gamefly.co.uk for £7.99 (about $12.50), the same time it was on sale on Steam, so picked up some DLC too. Haven't seen it as cheap again yet, even at Christmas.

Mind you, I still haven't started it thanks to the sales. May wait till I built a new rig anyway, see if I can max the settings and install some shiny gfx mods too.

Yep, the mage questline was a little underwhelming to say the least. I got the most fun out of the game with warrior type characters.

I will never understand how some people refuse to pay full price (or even half price, jesus) for what may be the greatest PC game of the last decade. Such stubbornness and self-deprivation...

Edit: Two Worlds II was okay. But after one 25-hour playthrough, there's nothing left. To compare it to TES is laughable. Also SkyUI is all you need as far as inventory mods.

After playing Two Worlds II, Skyrim just does not do it for me.

It took a little over an hour for Two Wolrds II to really get good, played Skyrim for 5 hours and thought "people enjoy this?".

Last time I look my partner played well over 100 hours, my dad 600 hours That was months ago... who knows what they are at now.

I'll give it another go once I bother to look then find a good inventory mod.

Apparently, even if you can stomach the type of "game" this is, it won't even work in "multiplayer" and playing it in AI mode takes away the entire point of the game.
The few suckers who purchased it generally have given bad reviews to it.
No one on my friends list owns it, usually even with indie niche games, SOMEONE on my friends list has it.

Edit: Oh and here's a link to a thread where the designer chimes in
http://steamcommunity.com/app/229600/discussions/0/846944689695935356/
I like these various quotes in that thread from the designer:

Give it a chance. For yourself.

In style they refer to many of Marguerite Duras' films in which she juxtaposes text that is read alongside images that don't directly relate to the words.

So to be effective, art will need to mask as pulp, be simple, so it can be accepted by the unaccustomed masses. Even if your art is intended for an elite, it still needs to be able to pass for shallow because otherwise the people who enjoy it risk public scorn, or simply prevent scorn by ignoring the art.

Anyway, it's obvious that any sort of education or cultural background will help one enjoy art better.

In my opinion, the artist should not care too much about the audience.

Needless to say, I won't be giving this a chance. I buy games to play and have fun, not be condescended to, sorry.

I have almost 300 hours put in Skyrim. It's maddening. Somehow I'm also booking progress in real life, otherwise I would've loathed myself for sure.

Games like Skyrim have an interesting attention curve for me, though. Once I finish the main quest.. I'm left with an empty feeling and lack of ambition. Suddenly exploring for the sake of exploring and fun has given way to a sense of a great lack of purpose. Just like that the veil just drops.. and I see the uselessness of it all.
Restarting fresh with a new character, however, gently puts that veil back on. It's so silly.
