Out of the Blue

I'm going to have to go on a hunt today to track down a noise in my office which has either just begun, or at least just become noticeable to the point of annoyance. It's a fairly high-pitched whine coming from my PC, so I assume it's a cooling fan, and hopefully a little compressed air will take care of it, though it's always possible something will need replacing. I keep thinking this entire years-old machine will need replacing one of these days, but it keeps trucking along like the Terminator, and every time I think it's developed some fatal issue, I find a cure just as soon. Maybe this time it's terminal just because I'm assuming it isn't, and the fates just love to mess with assumptions. We shall see.

A few years ago my very expensive 8800 Ultra graphics card bit the dust. And I mean literally, it was totally clogged. When I rebuilt my machine over the summer I got a new case, a Silverstone Raven III. The airflow is vertical with two massive 18cm fans on the bottom covered by washable magnetic dust filters which are removed laterally, not from the inaccessible rear like most cases. The drive bay slots all have washable dust filters too. For the remaining 12cm intakes on the side and rear I picked up some of these Silverstone magnetic filters to stick over the intakes. I live in a clean house with no pets, but find the filters are completely clogged after only three months.

Anyway, the interior of the machine is still pristine 9 months on. Just wanted to make my pitch for proper filtration.

Obviously, your opinion, but JJ has a decent track record as a director: MI3, Star Trek, and Super 8. All highly rated movies by both critics and audiences. Uwe Boll? Not so much.

Star Trek is the closest antecedent to Star Wars, and I thought that was his best one. So I think the chances of getting a decent movie are pretty good.

Also, the thing missing from the prequels was emotion, and JJ certainly does that better than Lucas.

Thank you for saying that. He's utterly destroying Star Trek. At least Star Wars got destroyed after ESB so it doesn't much matter in this case. In fact, Star Wars is the perfect sort of schlock for someone of Abrams and his pablum he spoonfeeds the masses.

It's either a fan, or it's coil-whine from your PSU. The latter could mean it's about to burn out, especially if it only happened recently. I always replace a coil-whining PSU, but that's mostly because I can't stand high-pitched noises. Creston
