And clearly you're not a baseball fan. But, with the Dodgers getting that insane deal, expect other sports to follow. NFL probably can't, but NBA certainly can. In my market it is. And I watched all Detroit Tigers playoffs games on my TV for free. Cut the cable subscription back in 2010. What about regular home games? I'm sad that TWC took Lakers games away. No more away games OTA on KCAL9! Well in that respect Beamer is right... I don't care about baseball enough to watch regular season games on TV but I'll catch 5 or more at the ballpark. |

Inside the US you CANNOT watch the NFL live. You can watch NFL Rewind.
NHL and NBA do not live stream local games. |

You can watch the NFL live through their website by subscribing to them directly. You can also subscribe to NHL Gamecenter, but that is subject to blackouts depending on your location (as Verno noted earlier). I'm not completely sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with the NFL as well. |

It is a big change for them and it could kill them - but doing nothing will definitely kill them eventually. Well, developing HBOgo allows them to work out the kinks in the software and distribution, while still having gobs of income from cable. And they won't anger their cable masters until they start to take a big hit in revenue and it makes sense for them to roll it out nation/worldwide. They'll continue to run limited trials and assess, but it will probably be another 5-10 years before we see this. |

I would love to be able to sign up for just HBO GO. I am more of a DVR/ondemand/streaming consumer so this would be a better fit than having 10 cross repeating HBO channels. I pretty much stopped watching the actual premium channels because they never air what I want to watch when I want to watch it.
You have to wonder however if they are going to go the Netflix/Hulu or the Amazon Video/iTunes model for the standalone client. I am sure there plenty of people willing to spend $7-8 on a all-you-can-consume streaming service as they already do with netflix and hulu. I also think a la carte service could work that lets you buy just the series you care about. |

| Funny you mentioned sports Beamer, as thats actually going online (live) as well. You can watch the NFL live through their website by subscribing to them directly. The superbowl and several playoff games are broadcast online for free already. I'm willing to bet it will be sooner rather than later as more and more people obtain access to smart tv's/broadband connections etc. |

I dunno, why the fuck would anyone pay extra to get HBO cable anymore when we can just get HBO:Online? Exactly. And, remember, they're owned by a cable company.
HBO doesn't create content to sell content. They create content to attract subscribers. Their audience isn't the just end user, it's the cable company (not sure how they work it, perhaps it's solely the cable company.)
Of course there could be a shift there, and it's on HBO could do very easily, but they'd have to be certain that their loss of bargaining power with the cable companies, as well as the cannibalization of subscribers, would be made up for by the purchases from new users. And it's hard to predict that, but probably safe to say it's unlikely.
Plus, much like major league sports, HBO has a growing importance. As of right now cable companies are desperate for things people can only get on cable and feel the need to watch as it happens. Hulu and Netflix have really shifted how and where people get and watch content, and DVRs make advertising less successful. But sports, man, people need to watch sports live, so now sports deals are huge. And HBO doesn't have advertising so it doesn't matter, but people can only get it one place and people want to watch it to talk about it at work the next day. This makes sports the most powerful draw to cable and gives it the best bargaining in a good deal with a cable company, and makes HBO one of the top 2 or 5 and gives them ridiculous pull as well.
As soon as they become available off of cable then suddenly they lose all that power over cable companies. |

But it makes 0 sense for them to switch it to public. It's a contingency plan, but it's hidden behind "in case of emergency," rather than being something they're actively planning to do. |
