Creative Assembly was just given the rights to do a Warhammer fantasy game. Pretty sure the license goes back to Games Workshop and become open to negotiation. Considering Sega already acquired the rights to make a WH Fantasy Battle recently and the successful working relationship Relic had with GW I can't see reacquiring the 40k license to be a huge challenge.
Really curious about the Homeworld IP. Heard quite a few different claims over the last few days. Most concerning is that it's still somehow owned by Vivendi though that also deals with legalese semantics like 'right to use' the IP vs. 'ownership of' the IP as spoken (or misspoken) by a PR person years ago. So who really knows? |

It seems like the Warhammer fantasy setting is just licensed per-game to whoever wants it. That's cool though, Creative Assembly is a good match for Warhammer fantasy.

The language in the release is conservative but in suitspeak terms it's really positive - ie if the lawyers at Sega were regular people, they'd be leaping out of their boots.
Great purchase, cheap deal, no downside. They'll make a ton of money and get a big bonus this year. All they have to do now is what suits do best - drink martinis and nothing else. |

| Creative Assembly had a bit of a rough patch after being acquired by Sega in 2005, but they've been doing what they do best lately: make great strategy games for the PC (Shogun II). Hopefully Sega apply those lessons learned to Relic and facilitate instead of meddle. |

Relic is almost (or entirely) exclusively a PC gaming developer. Why would SEGA buy them and expect them to make iOS games?
I had no faith at all in Disney right up until they acquired Pixar and just let them be. Then they acquired Marvel and just let them do what they were doing and that gives me hope for their Lucasfilm acquisition.
So hopefully SEGA didn't buy Relic to turn them into something they're not. I assume, and hope, SEGA is smarter than that. |
