JJ is a good choice.

Joss Whedon would have been a GREAT choice.

I thought the reboot was really safe and a bit too action for my scifi tastes to be honest but it was competent enough that I'd want to see a sequel.

Wow, another major franchise to rape for Abrams. Well, to be fair, Lucas already did that long ago. And let's face it, apart from ANH and ESB everything else pretty much sucked major ballsack anyhow. Then again, apart from TOS and TNG, Star Trek has been serial raped too. However, you can't much blame Gene for that.
ST:DS9 was great from season 4-6

Enterprise was complete awesomeness.

Going to hate on Stargate next? okay, we can all agree Universe was shite.

And the Trek reboot was actually pretty good and faithful to the original characters even with new actors. Like I said, if there's someone on Blue's bitching about something, 99 out of 100 times it's Cutter.

Have all the main characters get sucked out into space only to land on the backs of giant eagles that fly them to the Dagobah system where the starship enterprise is waiting to transfer them back to middle earth.

The most interesting director I heard who might have done this was Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-men First Class) casting Chloe Moretz (Kick Ass, Let Me In) in the lead. Now THAT would have been awesome: Hit Girl with lightsabers.

iiiii... don't trust this. never put your faith in a fanboi - they tend to get way overfocused on minutiae and lose sight of the overall purpose. abrams is alright, but he's not the master filmmaker that star wars demands. what made ESB a masterpiece was that irving kerschner brought so much soul and spirituality to it and made it a character piece in spite of the wiz-bangyness of it all. should be spielberg i feel, assuming he doesn't turn it into a kids' movie.

Abrams is not the best but a good choice. He loves Star Wars (much more than Star Trek, as he honestly confessed a while ago) and could give the franchise a good start with Episode VII. And he's a guy with own ideas who will refuse to be remotely controlled by George Lucas. And THAT is very important!

Yeah, I think there are a lot worse directors who could have ended up with this. And I'm not sure who I'd rather see, except maybe Joss (God of the Nerds).

@Cutter,
I take it you didn't like Star Trek. Who would you rather see direct Star Wars, and even the next Star Trek for that matter?

JJ is way more suited to Star Wars than Star Trek, and even still, I liked his Star Trek alright.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

JJ has made some good movies. I especially enjoyed Star Trek, and am looking forward to Into Darkness. Also, JJ isn't paired with Lindelof on this one.

He's a big Star Wars geek, so he'll be on top of things. His Star Trek is essentially a Star-Warsed version of that franchise, with action set pieces, big battles, heroics, effects, etc. I loved the kinetic-ism of the that movie, even if the story wasn't the greatest.
