SMITE Open Beta Launches

Hi-Rez Studios announces the commencement of open beta testing for SMITE, their free-to-play online action game, so those interested in a little SMITing can now register and download the beta client through the SMITE Website. This is another of those soft launch dealies, as they explain they do not plan any further character wipes going forward. Here's word on the beta, an exclusive skin for testers, and a $100K tourney:

Hi-Rez also announced their sponsorship of an upcoming SMITE competitive season, including a launch tournament with prizing of one hundred thousand dollars. Additional details on the 100K Tournament qualifications and schedule will be communicated in the coming weeks.

"SMITE has been our fastest growing game to date, with over 900,000 players participating in Beta already”, says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve been giving out keys very liberally, but today we officially drop the key requirement in order to stress and stabilize our North American and European servers in preparation for release. We will continue to polish the game, release additional gods, and further refine the god and item balance over the coming weeks before a general release later this quarter."

All player progress and unlocks up until now will be preserved through Open Beta and into Release with no planned character wipes.

Also, a Limited Edition cosmetic skin for the frost giant Ymir will be awarded to all players who reach Level 30 during the Beta period. That award will be granted upon SMITE’s official release.

The following new SMITE content and features are included in the Open Beta version:

  • Graphical upgrade of Conquest Map
  • Practice match against new AI opponent Ra
  • In-game Team & Roster Management
  • Ranked Team Conquest queue - Draft Picking for ranked and Challenge Conquest matches Improved Spectator Camera for Tournament Admins - including a 3-minute delay for spectators to prevent cheating and improved spectator controls (slow-motion, pause, rewind, fast-forward)
  • Refer-A-Friend Program

It's closer to MNC than dota/lol imo, just because of how its played. Faster paced than a lol or a dota, and somewhat dumbed down. ill be sticking to the traditional format personally; but good luck to them.

Since this is Hi-Rez, will it go to PTW at or shortly after launch?

OTS beat em up combat, all skill shots, not an RTS interface? My right click thanks you, Hi-Rez.

This is where MOBA style games should be going. MNC was awesome. Actual DOTA clones are boring and completely played out at this point. This at least brings something new to the table that LoL/HoN/DOTA2 refuse to.

MNC was awesome? MNC was one of the dumbest games ever, so stupid, the game had nothing but strategy problems, oh wait, there is no strategy.. its a time wasting game for morons who can't think.

Such is why MOBA games rule.. there's one problem... can you oficially name these software games?

There's no strategy there's no change in play... you're stuck playing a game for an hour thats actually decided in the first few minutes... oh unless someone's doorbell rings and they go afk..

I do not understand the fascination with these games. All I see is a lot of people being quite crude as they yell at you.

Kind of off-topic, but I have six Dota 2 beta key gifts in my Steam mailbox. I had no idea I've had these invites for the past 3 months (I didn't even know there was a Steam mailbox) and all my friends already are in it soooo... I'll give them to the first six who give me their Steam IDs. I figure I'd do it here before I give them away on reddit or whatever.

Yay! Another F2P MOBA game. Another game where elitist pricks can call your sexuality into question and tell you to uninstall the game just because you made a mistake in your very first match! Just what the world needs.

Seriously, MOBA players are among the worst dregs of humanity on the planet. Right up there with the COD kiddies on XBox Live.

Yes, this is yet another MOBA, i.e. DOTA clone. They invited me to the closed beta a while back, I guess just because I was a Tribes player, but there's nothing interesting to me about it.

Played the closed beta. Apparently it's similar to League of Legends, which I never played.

Like a tower defense except you're the dumdums running by
