New Kickstarter Seeks to Race Back to the 90s

A new Kickstarter looks to raise a modest £10,000 to create The 90's Arcade Racer, a throwback to the days where men were men, even if they still occasionally wore shoulder pads. The game is intended for Windows, OS X, and Linux with possible OUYA support. Here's word on the project's inspiration: "The three that ate up most of my coins where Scud Race, Daytona USA and Indy 500, my goal is to recreate the feeling these games evoked from players by maintaining the colorful, vibrant look and sense of speed but with modern visuals and car handling models." The developer has no apparent track record, but has "worked on several big and small projects both as a 2D and 3D artist," and this fundraiser has attracted the attention of sites like Kotaku and Rock, Paper, Shotgun. They already are.

It's been in development for a few years now. And the kickstarter gave them a good shot of cash.

I think they were still shooting for this fall, based on an update or two ago. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, it wasn't as deep as a sim, but you did have objects to hide behind and stuff, so in that respect it's different from a flight sim. But the fun part was also the part I liked best about Mechwarrior: configuring your vehicle and tweaking it exactly how you wanted, then trying that config in the field.

Also, we've had SO MANY WWII sims, but very few vehicle fighting games.

Have you tried GT Legends? I picked it up on Steam over the holidays, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

A lot of games have a Destruction Derby mode already. Dirt Showdown, for one. GRiD for another.

GTi Club was a great arcade too. You could free roam (to some extent given it was an arcade). Good fun.

This game looks a lot like I'm being thrown back into the Sonic universe. That's my opinion on that art style, anyway.

I like the colour. We really need to bring back that arcade feel of video games - loud, colourful, announcer etc.
