Codemasters Faces Layoffs

Codemasters is undergoing a consultancy that could result in layoffs, reports GamesIndustry International, saying that cuts would center on the company's digital and publishing efforts. They say a "strong source" tells them about 80 out of 500 positions may be cut, mostly from Codemasters' Southam studio responsible for racing games. They also have an official comment: "As the Company realigns its operations to focus on areas of increased strategic importance and decrease resources in areas that are not delivering value for the business, the Company has proposed the restructure of certain aspects within its digital development and publishing units in line with future product strategy," reads the official statement. "As a result of the proposed restructure, the Company has therefore entered into a period of collective consultation with the affected employees. The restructure is not company-wide and is not anticipated to impact the development of its core console and PC titles such as GRID 2 or its annual FORMULA ONE title."

So all Codemasters makes now is racing games but the layoffs they're planning largely affect the studio that develops racing games? What's left for them after that?

I'm guessing they may have had to cancel DIRT 4 or whatever was coming up later, as well as get rid of the team(s) supporting games such as the newest Race Stars and other older titles. The only solace to take from this is that GRID 2 and F1 20XX are what they're relying on to stay afloat, because one is pretty close to finished and the other is an annual iterative that sells pretty well AFAIK.

they're probably looking to outsource most of the art asset stuff to india/china. there's little call for game publishers in the traditional sense anymore.

Hopefully just layoffs and not more. Codemasters makes some pretty awesome racing games for PC. Am looking forward to GRID 2

Personally, I think this is the start of the demise of the mid-publishers and the beginning of a publisher crash. All the signs have been there for a long time and THQ is only the start. Blame it all on the business models of the publishers, they brought this on themselves.
