I guess on the flipside, they can't give Nintendo too much of a headstart.

Does Nintendo even compete with MS/Sony? I thought they kind of went after different markets with not much overlap.

Depends on who you ask, but I'd argue that the Wii didn't compete very directly against the PS3 and 360. Over time the audiences diverged pretty sharply.

Anyone who thinks that Sony will beat Microsoft out with a new console has had their head in the sand for the past few years. Sony is in serious financial troubles. Finding the money to fund a new console this year is going to be a real task. Especially if they have to subsidize it. They just cannot afford that at all.

You need to read this article, posted on Blues a few days ago. It explains why making a new console doesn't cost the 10s of millions of dollars to produce that it used to.

You mean you're NOT already thinking about Christmas 2013? Why are you such a procrastinator?

Beat out how, release date? The Playstation division (less Sony Ericsson cruft) is actually one of their few successes outside of parts manufacturing and was basically what sold Bluray to consumers, they will do everything they can to keep it competitive.

What do you guys do on your Xbox that you see ads? I agree it's ridiculous that they're there, but I never see them. Ever. If I'm playing a game I see the main screen for all of 3 seconds - as soon as it loads I hit A to start the game.

When I used Netflix I had it pinned to the menu and could open it in about 5 seconds.

Never even saw the ads. I just don't spend time in the menu system to actually see them.

Have to agree with Verno; current gen consoles have already become glossy advertisement-machines with kludgy interfaces. I really dont want another console at this point.

What's interesting is that Microsoft showed that awesome Illumiwall concept at CES.

Given how close that is to the expected E3 reveal of the Xbox 3, it'd be incredibly dumb to show that if it wasn't included in the new Xbox.

But I'm pretty skeptical that the Illumiwall can actually work without serious hardware. As we discussed in the thread, you need a projector (which is both costly and annoying) and that projector likely needs its own CPU for some processing.

Expensive, and of limited use. So I'd put money on it being at E3, but will it be one of those "coming shortly after launch" features that are so common and never show up, or will it be one of those gimmicks like R.O.B., that cost additional money over the basic package and get supported by like 3 games and quickly forgotten?

It's the same lead time the 360 got. Announced in May, on shelves for Christmas. The PS3 was announced the same day but released a year later, which many felt hurt them by reducing PS2 sales and giving the 360 a year of momentum over the PS3.

I don't think the year head start is what hurt them. Lack of games and a price tag that didn't seem to be justified hurt that system. The games didn't look good enough to ask for an extra $200. Plus many of the exclusive titles got delayed (gran turismo) or chopped up, warhawk, to the point of being different games.

All the titles that caught my attention didn't show up until at least a year after launch. That wasn't he case on the 360. Going forward they need a strong launch lineup.

Zero interest in Microsoft this generation. Between the RROD fiasco, exclusives dwindling, Adbox galore and the Live proposition continuing to drop Microsoft can't win me back without some serious effort. I'm marginally interested in Sony's next gen stuff but I might just skip this console gen altogether and go with the PC exclusively. I think there was 5 total exclusive titles I thought were "system sellers" and I could have lived without them.

I think what I'll do is maybe buy-in 3-4 years into the generation, get the system and games super cheap.

Wouldn't be surprised to see both do 6 months from announce to release this time. Less cannibalization.

The 360 was announced at that year's E3, but there had been a lot of pre-E3 sneak peeks and such, right? We know about its specs and what it was going to look like etc long before that year's E3. So far we've really not heard much beyond the "Well, duh, there's going to be a new console by MS (and by Sony.)"

I guess on the flipside, they can't give Nintendo too much of a headstart.

This year? That seems an awfully short time for either company to get the hype machine going.

I guess they could do big reveals at E3 and release in time for Xmas, but it still seems a very short lead time.
