As someone who ignored Cyberpunk 2020 completely the trailer had more of a Ghost in the Shell vibe and that's good. Let's just hope they won't spoil that vibe by putting too many 2020 references in there. (Yes yes, you Cyberpunk 2020 fans can now bash me, I never liked the setting, to me it felt OUTDATED (or disjointed from current times?) even when it came out). And of course you may hope they stick to the source. But as Deus EX and Ghost in the Shell showed, good cyberpunk takes our CURRENT situation and extrapolates believably forward. Even today you could play Deus EX and take the sci-fi out, and you end up with believable fictional events that could happen right now. If you (try) that with Cyberpunk 2020 you get hilarious results. Rockers who are charismatic leaders, for example ;p Full machine races... I mean.. please. Transhumanism is about the PROCESS. It's not proper cyberpunk if you put us too far into it. Then it becomes disjointed and has no impact.
Syndicate tried to do this to some extend as well, but boy did they fuck that up in gameplay, but at least the setting was cool.
Anyway, time will tell whether it was a good idea to take Cyberpunk 2020 as inspiration.. Personally, I would have chosen Ghost in the Shell... |

i tell you what - bassnectar and some of those cats are pretty good at making interesting sfx and bizarre modulations, but the music is fucking shit, sorry

Sony and MS have taken huge losses on this generation's hardware and after seeing the success of the Wii and the growing casual market, they're not going make a prohibitively console again. I never suggested otherwise. It's certainly not going to be as much of an advance as the current generation was, as it's mainly a bump to support 1080p and alleviate the main bottlenecks (memory, optical capacity, storage, GPU). However, moving up to 1080p and increasing the texture resolution is enough to make a significant difference for multi-platform titles and hopefully tessellation will be easily achievable.
My point was more that it won't be limited by the ultra-shit current gen consoles. Honestly, I don't think 1080p will even be standard for most next-gen games. The current gen is perfectly capable of running games at 1080p but developers choose to focus on using higher quality assets instead. Hell, many games don't even run at 720p. I suspect next-gen games will be no different, which is fine by me because the PC versions will still get the higher quality assets in addition to higher resolutions, AA and framerate. |

Creston Yeah, you could probably guess from the cleavage, but that trailer is NSFW.
That's a pretty cool world they created. I'd like to see gameplay on that one for sure. CD Projekt has a good track record. It's actually R Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020 setting, advanced 50 years. And as an old fan of 2020 (never got to play the original cyberpunk) they've done, art design wise, an incredible job here. The trailer is dripping with references to the game.
I'm looking forward to it. I always preferred Cyberpunk to Shadowrun, even though SR was a lot of fun, CP was more pure sci-fi and early trans-human than SR was.
Oh, and as far as the music, while it was kind of cheesy, Rocker Boys (I kid you not that's what they're called) are a big part of the game. So yeah, cheesy music, but actually highly appropriate in the setting. |

Seems to be smoke-and-mirrors here, so I doubt the graphics will be as they portray in the trailer. It's a teaser trailer, so it's not meant to represent in-game graphics or gameplay. It's designed to show off art-style and design direction, which it does very well. That said, there's nothing in there that's hugely radical and even as a multi-platform title it will be designed with next-gen consoles in mind - the graphics could easily be that quality in-game. Next-gen consoles definitely aren't going to be as powerful as everyone seems to think. Sony and MS have taken huge losses on this generation's hardware and after seeing the success of the Wii and the growing casual market, they're not going make a prohibitively console again. Next-gen consoles will focus primarily on social features and becoming general entertainment hubs, not just for games but for movies, music, TV shows, etc. |
