I think late 20s/early 30s? I went in at like 34-36 and didn't get a damn thing useful (I'm not farming torque tokens, sorry, this isn't a MMO).

The first DLC starts at level 30, I think. I think if you were to go in early, you'd just get slaughtered. Typically, it's good to play the borderlands DLC at the end of your first run through, so that you get some extra levels to give you a heads up for PT2. (advise: Farm the Warrior a few dozen times before you go to PT2. If you don't have top notch weapons, the road to Sanctuary in PT2 is reaaaaaallllyy fucking annoying.)

Yeah, I think shot for shot Zero does more damage, but when he's faced with a group of people, all he can do is shoot them to death.
With Maya, a group of people means PARTY TIME.  My favorite is to get a group of a dozen+ enemies active, then throw a Quasar grenade, watch them all get sucked into the black hole, and then phaselock them. Oh, the glorious, glorious damage.

Admittedly I didn't play around much with build, but when not phaselocking I found her useless.
The amount of critical damage Zero does, combined with Bore, gives me 700,000+ in a regular, vanilla headshot. Add the right element to that and it's well over a million. String a few together... I've done 12 million.
And then there are those crazy shots against BNK3R where I've done over a trillion (no lie, saw 7 digits then a K.) |

I use two shotguns for certain occasions. Conference Call for use against bosses, because watching those 90 billion shots hit something is so amusing, especially when it's slagged. The Warrior basically dies in 10 seconds.
And then I have one, forget what it's called, but its power is "kiki needs a shotgun" or something like that. And what it does is that when you reload, you throw it like a normal Tediore gun, but instead of just sailing away and exploding, it actually chases targets and KEEPS FIRING AT THEM.
I have an acid one, and it's so much fun to watch it murder buzzards in the sky, it should be illegal.
Oh, a buzzard.
- switch to shotgun.
- fire one shot
- reload
- watch shotgun hunt down buzzard and terminate it with cruel, calculating precision.

I have no screenshot of it, but I've done ~8 million damage (8000K) with a single shot with Maya... Phaselock something, watch everything get pulled towards her, and get electrocuted, slagged and corroded, then rattle off your extra elementary effect SMG, and it's a literal FEAST of Ks dancing across your screen.
A single phaselock by itself will easily kill an entire group of mooks, and mine recharges in like 7 seconds. I could probably play with just phaselock and never have to fire a gun at anything except for bosses.
Of course, a lot of that is build and weapon dependent.

Man, I hated her single player. She just couldn't do enough damage at level 50. My Zero can basically 1-5 shot anything in the game, and the Gunzerker's ability to Gunzerk while down makes him somewhat invincible. |

She really is, especially with a properly done Ruin/Converge build. Groups of enemies become amusing.
I ended up liking my Mechromancer far more though, the Make it Sparkle/Upshot Robot build with some ricocheting bullets, interspersed outburst and shock cloud is amazingly devastating. |
