Once calibrated, I'd expect the Kinect to be able to return to it's normal position.

This assumes two things:
1) That what it's scanning doesn't change. If one of those drawers isn't open when calibrated, but is while playing, the effect is ruined (arguably, I suppose it's peripheral vision and matter less, but still.) Seems a scan every time may be better
2) That the projector isn't built into the Kinect. This would mean it's 3 pieces of hardware, which sounds ridiculous. I'm guessing the Kinect/projector is all in 1

Which means the new Kinect needs to take much, much higher res images. It also needs to be smart. While I think processing the image after the scan can be offloaded to the Xbox, doing those effects around the TV need to be processed on the projector. Otherwise it's wasting CPU/GPU time, for something that won't be used 100% of the time or by 100% of the people. I can't see that. Better to have the Kinect be able to manipulate and generate.

That.. is.. fucking.. AWESOME.

Probably need a high end projector to do it... but wouldn't the kinect need to be facing the area where the TV is so it can scan the environment?

It's all low-res images, so a projector with a brain could do it. Doesn't need to be high end at all.

The issue, as you said, is that the Kinect needs to be facing the TV. Or 360. Putting the Kinect somewhere in front of the TV just sounds impossible, as does 360, so there's the giant limitation I don't see being readily overcomeable.

About time. Note they are all old games though because the FOV/RES is huge so needs more firepower to run like the Rift.

I expect this will be superceded by iglasses though for gaming, maybe the room will stick.

People like to talk about immersion... This is immersion to me.

Reminds me of the awesome Philips TVs that never made it to market in the US. Such a great idea. I'm skeptical this is something that can be done cheaply or well at this point, but the Philips TVs worked quite nicely. Inspired me to use a ton of LEDs to backlight my TV, but unfortunately it's not dynamic (although if I had a PC hooked up to my TV I could hobble together something to make it dynamic somewhat easily, it would just be a hassle.)

I only mean the earlier footage shown, though, that's just colors. Once it becomes something more than abstract colors it starts looking stupid. When the whole wall is the screen it looks flat-out dumb. But when it's just colors extending off the screen, occasionally with some yellow explosions, it's pretty sweet.
