AoE Online Content Development Ceasing

The Age of Empires Online Blog announces that Ensemble is ceasing the development of new content for the multiplayer RTS game, though there is a small amount of new stuff still in the pipeline that they will complete before shutting off the tap. They stress that nothing else is changing, and that the game will continue to operate as before, and will be fully supported. They explain the reason for the change in a brief FAQ: "Because creating top-tier content, as we have been for the last year and a half, is very expensive—too expensive to maintain for long, as it turns out. We can no longer afford to keep creating it. AOEO already has a very large amount of high-quality, hand-crafted entertainment, and adding more is no longer cost-effective." Thanks Massively.

So much for that PC platform support. They couldn't even keep the 2 games they announced going. Microsoft is really pathetic, all of those billions and they can't even make a halfway decent PC platform exclusive. Not like it was hard to see this coming with how monetized the game was.

What a fucking waste of Ensemble and the AOE franchise, love to see the shills try to spin this one.

Good thing we've still got Games for Windows Live!

With Win8 bombing hard I think MS is about to learn the very hard way that their neglect of the PC platform (Windows, Office, Games) is about to cost them dearly. The Xbox division hardly brings in any revenue.

Sadly they've probably just killed AOE off fully with this massive screwup.
Yupp. Ensemble was killed, because MS wanted to please the investors which were unhappy with the perfomance of the entertainment division so MS closed everything which was not Zune or XBOX.

Knowing that AoE was a popular and profitable franchise (just look at the Steam charts where AoE3 is constantly in the at least Top 20), they thought they might please the investors when they turn this franchise into a hype F2P casual game, because casual gaming and F2P are, you know, "important".

In the end, nobody was happy. Not the investors, nore MS, nore the customers. Good job, everyone!

So much promise... such a terrible game.
There was promise? If you say so, it looked to me including what I tried in the beta that they were going for a uber casual crowd. Sadly they've probably just killed AOE off fully with this massive screwup.

Ensemble?. We wish. You mean GPG, Blue.

Shame on Microsoft for first killing Ensemble and then greenlighting this travesty of a game.

This could have been moderately fun if was actually F2P or more realistic about content prices. You could do almost nothing with the base game and the content packs (at least at launch, I can't speak for any later reductions) were too expensive for what they were.

You didn't have to be psychic to see this coming. And the game will be fully supported will it? Just nothing new for it ever again. Heh.
