Well, the cautious part of my cautious optimism about our car turned out to be more accurate than the optimism part, as it refused to start after having a couple of days to drain the battery. It spent the night at the mechanic: He found a problem with a dome light that stayed on when the door was closed, but he's not sure that's the entirety of the problem (and I'm pretty sure he's right that it isn't), so he's taking some more time to suss it out.

The key is to always pay cash for a car. Never get a loan. Actually, no. The best thing to do is get it financed and take the cash discount versus the 0% APR, then pay it off the next day. You can typically save yourself a thousand bucks that way, and the turn-around is fast enough that you basically take no hit on your credit score. Creston

also why pay cash? it takes forever for most people to save up enough to buy a new car. not to mention the fact that with payments, what you pay over time is actually less than the value of the car when it was new even though monetarily it's the same; especially if you can get a zero interest loan (like i did). also, i just made my last payment on said car. go me!

So I made money off interest in my bank instead of paying for it all at once. And it padded my credit rating at the same time...

When you are lucky enough to have a good trustworthy mechanic, letting him diagnose the problem seems desirable. I just spoke with my guy and this broken dome light switch on the door seems to be the culprit. Replacing the alternator would not have addressed that, so I think I made the correct choice.

I know it sounds like throwing money at it and hope it works...but that is what I usually do with older cars. How old is you car BTW?

Older fits. It's an '03 so it's probably about 10 (we got it used). It's an Accord, and has never cost us much for repairs (which is the idea behind getting such a car). We've had two serious issues along the way, and both of them were handled for free by Honda out-of-warranty, since they still deemed themselves responsible.
