| Thanks for the great reply Dev, I'll check out the free version and take it from there. I have a few ideas kicking around I want to try out, although I haven't done any programming for about 5 years or so. |

Also, did you read over the description?
The GameMaker: Studio family of products caters to entry-level novices and seasoned game development professionals equally allowing them to create casual and social games for Steam Workshop, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, desktop and the Web (HTML5) in record time and at a fraction of the cost! [emphasis added]
Note that its designed around social/casual games. If thats what you are planning to do, then it may well be worth it. But note if that IS what you are going to do, most of those are plugins that cost extra, and that its over $300 to get the set with all the options.
Here's a list of games done with it thats on their site: http://www.yoyogames.com/game_showcases I play a fair amount of non phone casual games, and I didn't recognize any of them, but take a look for yourself. Hmm, that may be because thats just from the one developer, I'm not sure.
One thing that is quite interesting is that its steam workshop integrated. So you can check out the kinda stuff it can make there: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?appid=214850 Thats actually a pretty brilliant move to use steam workshop. It not only increases community involvement, but lets people try out things to see what the kit can do, and increases sales directly from people who want to make things too.
They also offer the basic version for free: http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/studio http://store.steampowered.com/app/214850/ So you could check it out and do your own games and see what you think before buying it. Its likely to go on sale again (this is 2nd time its been on sale in the steam winter sale), and if not now, then during a future steam sale.
Entirely up to you how much research you want to do. I did enough in a few mins to get you started
Edit: Note that its cheaper to get the addons individually, rather than the package deal. Since the addons are 66% off and the package deal is 33% off.
$271.95 Price of individual games: $334.99 Bundle cost: This comment was edited on Jan 3, 2013, 01:15. |
