U.K. Game Market Declines

The U.K.'s Entertainment Retailers Association says the overall game market in the U.K. declined by 17.4% in 2012 reports MCV. That figure encompasses digital as well as retail sales, as a 26% drop in physical sales more than offset a 7.7% increase in digital sales.

The U.K.'s Entertainment Retailers Association says that the way that they gather data on the overall game market is increasingly irrelevant.

Yeah, these sales numbers are extremely suspect, as they don't include Valve, Origin, etc. Nor does it track money spent on Kickstarter or indiegogo.

Anecdotally, I've never spent more on games ever, between Steam/Origin sales and Kickstarter. I would be shocked if game sales were doing anything but increasing. Just look at all the new IP coming out next year. There wouldn't be this huge variety and massive number of things in development if the industry was in decline.

So the UK tracks its digital sales? We don't hear about them here in the US.

I'd love to know how they collate accurate digital sales figures, considering how many different e-tailers there are..I'm in the UK and I buy a lot of games off Steam, but can Valve et al really be bothered to pigeonhole their sales based on location and then hand that data over to a third party?

No, Valve does not.
