Steam Stops Selling The War Z

Kotaku has word that The War Z is no longer sold on Steam just days after the zombie survival game was added to some outcry (thanks nin). They have a statement from the game's developer: "We're making sure that our Store page is 100% correct this is why," Sergey Titov tells them. "Bottom line – our end goal is to have satisfied and not angry customers, so this is more important for us than everything else." Here is the explanation they received from Valve:

From time to time a mistake can be made and one was made by prematurely issuing a copy of War Z for sale via Steam. We apologize for this and have temporary removed the sale offering of the title until we have time to work with the developer and have confidence in a new build. Those who purchase the game and wish to continue playing it via Steam may do so. Those who purchased the title via Steam and are unhappy with what they received may seek a refund by creating a ticket at our support site here.

This story just gets weirder... I mean, I am not even sure this is true or if it is just "piling on"...but still...wow...

It's funny how he seems to have changed his tune now that Valve has taken action. Before it was the haters' and the fanboys' fault. He seems to be singing a different (and decidedly less douchey) tune now, which is good.

Despite all of the negative buzz and reviews ultimately I think this game is possibly salvageable. Obviously this style of game isn't for everyone (as evidenced by TotalBiscuit's scathing review) but if you can tolerate the slow plodding pace and the technical shortcomings (like the awful animations and performance) it may end up being something you can enjoy... once they properly finish it.

Why do I get the impression that the feeling on the servers now that this has devolved into a mess is akin to that of when Galactica rammed the evil Cylon colony and everything went ape shit? IOW, a total clusterfuck...

tl;dr as you wish but I just don't like this guy and his ripoff game so here goes...

This guy saw an opportunity to cash in on the success of the Day Z mod and he took it. Plain and simple. All of this talk of these features is just talk at this point. When this "game" was released in its alpha stages, it had even fewer features than it does at its present stage, which says a lot considering there are still no features at all.

This guy had an idea, modded War Inc., did the whole song and dance of promises and features, and sold us a bill of goods. The game is being put together piece by piece while every sucker (including myself) continues to play a completely unpolished turd. Why just the other day I dropped dead by simply walking. After respawning and trying to recover my gear that I had found, I died while simply walking, in the exact same spot. There are invisible walls everywhere too.

Eventually, we may see all of the features he's been talking about but it won't be anytime soon. This game was a simple cash grab, and it's worked. But now they have to deal with this reputation of hype and broken promises.

I only fear that it isn't too late for Rocket to release the standalone of Day Z. If anyone plays Day Z, it's not exactly as popular as it was a few months ago. Not because of this piece of crap War Z, it's just gotten old.

I hope for Rocket and his guys that they haven't missed the boat while this fraud cashes in. Refunds or not, these guys have banked off of Day Z's success right out from under its nose.

I paid $20 for War Z to get in on the Alpha just to see how awful it would be and I got my moneys worth. I see the patch notes from time to time and just laugh at all of the things that should have already existed. If any major developer did what these guys are doing we would be screaming for their resignation and/or heads.

The only smart thing these guys did was placing the non-disclosure agreement on the alpha phase. If people were allowed to stream/record what it looked like that first couple of weeks, this game would have never seen the light of day. This guy is a joke and a fraud. They copy pasted the EULA from League of Legends for fucks sake.

If people didn't hate the Arma engine/game so much they wouldn't have to be settling for this horrible knockoff. Day Z standalone can't get here soon enough.

On topic I am completely shocked that Steam would have no idea about the outrage towards this title and do absolutely zero fact checking before putting this on their store. This hurts Hammerpoint more than it hurts Steam though. Good on them publicly offering refunds.

Apparently, you can ask for a refund.

Not yet, first I am going to get the inventory hack and go kill all of those fucking bandits!

This is one game where I would actually welcome hackers.

There are 100 people servers, was playing for the last few hours on them. Tough to survive.

The only thing it has over DayZ, is that it is playable and isn't a horrid Arma2 mess.

So the second article under "outcry" mentioned the Devs blasting the hard core people. How is this any different than false advertising? Here are the descriptions of the game, nothing saying it was in beta, talking about a large world where it's currently just a small map. Face it War Z Devs: you screwed up.

Yeah, quite frankly I wish they would stop this. Or sell them in a separate beta category or something.

It is back up.

Servers filled with Bandits. Even went to a 16 player server and a bandit killed me in a resort town. Although fun at times, gets old getting killed non stop.

Tons of hax, tons of cheats......

Protip valve: It wouldn't hurt to contract out some minimum wage temp workers to play games that are going to appear on your store page for at least an hour, see if they are a total buggy mess with none of the features that they claim on the store page in place.

On the one hand I'd say that since Steam has such market presence and power, that's not too much to ask of them, especially since they make a billion dollars+ per year.

Otoh, we don't ask this of any other retailer or sales outlet in the entire US, so why is Valve suddenly required to do so?

I think as long as Valve responds to complaints and then delists the game in question if said complaints are found to be true, they've done their due diligence.

That could well be. If you look at movies, there's a few companies that frequently release some titles similar to big sellers (often on DVD while actual movie is in theatre), to try and cash in on some of that. Those movies are usually always rated very poorly. There's even a page on wiki about such practices, "mockbusters" they are called.
For instance, right now I believe "Age of Hobbits" is out on DVD.
Previous examples include "Transmorphers" "alien vs hunter" "Snakes on a train" etc.

Turns out that just like greenlight where they did no checking of the entries (initially leading to things like porn and other people's games on greenlight, and games ppl wanted sequels to), they also do no checking of steam's store page descriptions.

Thats probably the worst part of this, now everyone knows that, and someone could promise the moon on a greenlight game, and get it approved and put all sorts of fake things on the steam store page and sell it. If they word it a little more carefully than this guy, they might even get away with it. Like if they put in a little disclaimer in fine print at the bottom about all the features being "planned" and not actual.
