Out of the Blue

We are entering day three of our plodding transition to FiOS here. A technician arrived this morning to address how we are not getting incoming calls and that one of our phones is using the wrong number. Every step of this process has involved the person we are currently dealing with questioning the statements made by the people we previously dealt with, and today was no different. Apparently this may take a really long time to straighten out, and we are in danger of losing one of our old phone numbers along the way. I just keep reminding myself that as long as the house isn't burning we're still ahead of the game.

For today's completely inane and random thought, I thought I'd share what I just learned. Being just another self-absorbed and self-centered American, I never bothered to learn anything about Boxing day, but Cutter's mention of it made my mosaic mind (which really only consists of three remaining functional brain cells working at about half capactiy) want to finally learn the scoop on Boxing Day. For no reason whatsoever, here it is:

.. . It is observed in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and some other Commonwealth nations. In South Africa, Boxing Day was renamed to Day of Goodwill in 1994. In Ireland it is recognized as St. Stephen's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Stiofáin) or the Day of the Wren (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín). In some European countries, notably Germany, Poland, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands, 26 December is celebrated as the Second ChristmasDay. [2] In Canada, Boxing Day takes place on 26 December and is a federal public holiday. [3]

Anyway, don't mind me - the stress of the end of the year rush and crazy work hours has me pretty much fucked in the head. Don't worry though, I am harmless. Mostly.

Welp, I have 2 dozen bludray discs anyway so I need a player regardless. And even with the 360 the only thing I actually bought were the GTAs and RDR. Everything else was always a rent and it would be the same with the PS3. I dunno, maybe I'll just blow it off entirely and buy a new vid card for my PC instead.

Edit: Wicked money saver! Transferring an old Xbox 360 Hard drive into the new Slim Xbox 360 So if I can pick one of these 4gig slims for a good deal on Boxing Day I'm laughing. First I'll try and repast this box however.

I do own like 30 PS3 games but they are almost all one-and-done affairs. Then again I have basically no friends with whom to play, so what can you do... and I'm pretty sure I got all of two console-exclusive games this year (Dragon's Dogma and Catherine). This cycle is dead, man... it would be pretty silly to get on board this late in the game unless you really really really need a(n expensive) BRD player.

If you're not in it for multiplayer gaming, now is as good a time as any to get on board. Systems are cheap and there are a bunch of cool PS3 exclusives.

Bought a PS3 again due to the Black Friday deal that best buy gave me on the Saturday after (woot), and it came with the 2 games I wanted for the system Infamous 1 and 2. They really did clean up their online store and Playstation Plus beats the hell out of Xbox Live subscription.
That being said there is maybe 1 or 2 games I would consider buying for the system, but mainly bought it for a good Blu Ray player, minor game playing device.

My TV & Internet use the fibre line but the phone uses the old copper line. I remember wondering why they did'nt use it all on the one line at the time but I guess your troubles Blue could explain it.

Well fuck a duck! Finally grabbed a copy of Ass Creed III for my 360 and wouldn't you know it... the three ring RROD! I was installing it to the HD and it just wigged out and when I rebooted...RROD. I'm pretty pissed about this because even though I bought it at the end of 2007 (so warranty is long done) I've barely used the thing. Not a great value for the $500 I paid for it initially methinks. I think I'll see about picking up a PS3 on Boxing Day because I gave me Ma my Aquos LCD as I got an LG LED instead, so I figure she can have my Aquos Bluray player too and that way it'll justify getting the PS3 for meself.

Has anyone ever tried these RROD fixes with the towels or qtips for overheating it? Or freezing it? Or pulling it apart and doing new thermal paste? Seeing as it's garbage other wise - because damned if I'm paying $123 + shipping to get it repaired - I may as well see if I can squeeze some more life out of it.

And if you haven't seen that Kids in the Hall sketch before give it a look, it's funny as hell.

I'd ascertain that you have a problem with your 360, and now that I have both a 360 and PS3, 360 is still my lead console machine. Secondly Cutter, I'd ascertain a google search to see what potential easy remedies you can find for fixing your 360, but honestly if you have the old 360 like me I'd be worth it to upgrade to the newer 'slim' model, which I will do when mine dies.

Supposed fix.

Having both, I'd say my PS3 is somewhat of a waste. It's hardly used. 2 BluRays, 3 games (all 3 Uncharted.) I own 10 games for it, but I'm not sure I'll ever play the others. I hate the control, dislike the interface, etc.

The 360 is just better thought out. Except for those RRODs, which is a pretty damning thing. Mine is a Jasper, so those didn't much get affected by them.

I wonder if you could actually play with it, as the thin inner parts would probably deform from the pressure of squeezing it onto other bricks?

To me, that's a feature not a problem.

What you want to bet that their laughing about American drivers with their own compilations?

i mean, maybe it's just a case of skewed perception due to highlights, but i've never personally seen some of the crazy stuff in these russian driving compilations; notably, how so many of them refuse to slow down for any amount of traffic. i think that alone was the cause of the majority of the accidents in these vids. in all my years of driving i can only remember one instance of someone brazenly ignoring traffic to such a dumbfounding degree. also, the alarming lack of traffic signals and signage. a quick search on youtube doesn't come up with any comedic american driving compilations.

It's mostly bullshit temporary fixes, there is no long term fix as it was a design flaw combined with a thermal problem. The ones they sent back to people frequently had the same issue again later on. Unless you can reflow it yourself (and do a good job) just get a new one or do what I did and double down on the PS3 instead.

Well I think they've got us beat on sheer quantity.

I will say I didn't see as many traffic signals, so maybe that's part of the problem? That, and everyone seems to be in a big hurry in all those videos.
