Out of the Blue

I mentioned id's penchant for releasing games around this time of year, and sure enough, today is the anniversary of DOOM's release in 1993, changing the course of many lives, including my own. I'll find a suitably DOOM-worthy way to celebrate, though in a perfect world this would involve a little deathmatch via dialup. I wonder if I can recall my modem string.

Played with that port religiously until I discovered ZDaemon. While ZDaemon doesn't have all the graphical bells and whistles that Doom Legacy has, I find ZDaemon more entertaining for it's integrated MP client and auto-.wad downloads.

Ah, Doom. I still remember the dread and terror I had the first time I encountered the Cyberdemon. Those awful footfalls, and getting obliterated by rockets as soon as I stepped out of the door. The other big scary moment I had was the first time I opened a door in Wolf 3D and the soldier was there and shot me. I jumped out of my chair. Thanks for the memories, id. Now, about Rage...
I remember playing co-op with my friends in DOOM 1 on dial-up. That was intense.

That's impressive he still remembers. I went for a gig once - when I was still in IT - and had to write out several different modem strings for stuff and it was easy as hell at the time. Now it - almost - looks like Greek to me.

Hell, I guess that would be the same for most of us if we had to do that or write autoexec.bat or config.sys files once again. Hell, remmeber getting cute with that stuff and writing things in so it would seem like your PC was Hal and talking to you and it would impress the hell out of anyone you had over?

Remember multi-configs, emm386.exe, XMS, EMS, dos4gw.exe, Stacker, DoubleSpace, smartdrv.exe, etc.?

How about a BHC tv show, featuring his son, with occasional appearances by Murphy?

Cause it's happening...

No, he wants a quick and easy paycheck.

That could be, but he's actually said in interviews that he's trying to make stuff his own kids would enjoy watching. (of course, that's been well over a dozen years ago. His kids are now teenagers, so they'd probably want him to go back to Beverly Hills Cop or something.)

And shit, I want a quick and easy paycheck too.

I would have gotten reds but blue was all Amazon had.

I just got a Gigabyte Osmium with reds--I had initially wanted a keyboard with browns. After using it for a while, despite really liking it, I think I would prefer something with browns. I can't train myself to back off before bottoming the keys out without some sort of feedback.

And not much, playing a few music gigs here and there, doing computer work every so often.

Dunno about Enahs, though I thought I saw him post a little while back.

@Creston: I have no issue with EM making kids movies. I don't really know about them, other than the Shrek series which he's actually pretty good in (Myers is annoying tho). I just know the commercials I see for movies like Norbit and Meet Dave look atrocious, so I'm wondering how they keep getting made. I guess you're right: someone is making money is how.

I was a fan back in the 80s, but his work went downhill in the 90s. I honestly haven't seen anything he's been involved in since the original Shrek more than 10 years ago. Am I missing something? Why is this guy still making movies?

It's weird that, last fall, when he was selected to host the oscars, there was talk of him revitalizing his career: going back to standup (yea!), no more crappy or kiddie movies, etc...

I was genuinely intrigued, and it sounded like a step in the right direction.

And then nothing happened. At all. Well, he bowed out of the oscars, but that was it. And not a peep since then.

I don't see why people have such a problem with him making kiddie movies. Yeah, we think they are crap, because we're not 10 years old. (and admittedly, some of them really DO stink, but he has made some good kids movies too.)

He wants to make the kind of movies that he's comfortable with having his own kids watch. Why is that a big deal?

And as for why he's still making movies, well, probably because Hollywood still keeps paying him to do so.

Doom changed my life, too. I was half-way through my junior year at Portland State when I decided to take a term or two off from school so I could work more and afford the ridiculous long distance charges I was racking up playing dwango. That was 18ish years ago. Still playing Doom, though.
