Company of Heroes 2 Closed Beta Nears

A post to the Company of Heroes 2 Forum has an update on the state of Relic's upcoming RTS sequel (thanks IncGamers), which a companies a new video developer diary titled "Preparing for War." The forum update covers an Alpha Stress Test next week for a limited number of players, plans to enter closed beta testing "shortly after the New Year," and the following commitment to post-release support:

Building on experiences from our previous titles, we’re committed to improving our post launch support efforts, by regularly updating the game. This means lots of bug fixing, balance updates and FREE content, for everyone to enjoy. For those interested in more, we’re now excited to introduce the Command Pass - an opt-in upgrade that offers perks like advanced map access, special event access and other bonuses. It’s free for pre-order customers who purchase the Digital Collector’s Edition and a 1 time cost/lifetime upgrade for anyone that didn’t get in on the pre-order goodness. More detailed information will absolutely be available later.

As a current, frequent player of CoH online I can relate that since the THQ 'pay-what-you-will-give-away' the quality of online players has diminished significantly. Most telling is the number of lude and/or vulgar game names which were mercifully very rare for years but now noticeable. That does not diminish from the excellent game-play of CoH, which CoH 2 will probably not exceed, certainly nothing in the visuals indicates any improvement. Also, each expansion pack for CoH was less than the one before it, Tales of Valor being almost pointless. That it's Steam only makes any anticipation also pointless, locked into Gabe Newell's private walled garden. Enjoy. p.s. No Steam shills, employees, marketing affiliates or wanna-bes need reply without identifying yourself as such, and we know the likelihood of that happening is NEVER.

No, it's pretty plainly stated that the post-release content updates will be free. Then in another sentence (there should probably be a paragraph break), they start talking about a separate sort of premium VIP access thing.

I don't get it. Free and then purchase a pass in the same sentence? So it's free as long as we pay?
