Ships Ahoy - Drox Operative

Soldak Entertainment announces that beta testing of Drox Operative has concluded, and release version of the action/RPG is now available for Windows and OS X. The game is available on this page and the playable demo is located here. Here's word:

In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

Features:

  • Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
  • Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
  • Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
  • Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
  • Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
  • Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
  • Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

As Soldak says:
Drox Operative will also probably run fine in Linux using Wine (our previous games have).
The demo worked perfectly for me using Wine 1.4.1. Pity none of their games so far have really suited my tastes.

The interface and UI (and even the sounds) share a lot with Din's Curse, so if you've played that before it should feel very familiar. I haven't played the demo enough yet to have a solid impression, but so far I get the same vibe I did with Din's Curse: lots of potential, but it needs a higher production value.

Been playing the demo. Interface is a little frustrating. Definitely a learning curve, and I'm not picking it up very quickly. Trading and slots and cargo bays and quests (etc) are confusing, but it looks like it could be a blast once you learn the ins and outs of how to play. I'm kinda thick, though, so it's been somewhat of a slog for me so far.
