Endless Space Free Weekend

Steam News announces that everyone is now invited to play Endless Space, Amplitude Studios' space strategy game. The event isn't endless, however, and the free period will conclude on Sunday at 4:00 pm EST, but the accompanying 50% off sale on the game will continue until the next day at 1:00 pm EST. Here's word on the game:

This galaxy is ancient. Its first intelligent life was the civilization we call the Endless and all that remains of this people is what we call Dust. This substance has been found scattered throughout the galaxy and lost in forgotten temples, it once gave powers to admirals and galactic governors. The galaxy will belong to the faction that can take control of the Dust and uncover its secrets…

Guide one of eight civilizations as you strive for galactic dominion within hundreds of star systems. Play against up to seven opponents in quick match-ups or endless war. Generate an infinity of random galaxies where every start begins a new adventure and optimize each fleet for epic battles.

They have been patching and enhancing the game ever since it came out.

They just released the second of 3 free add-ons. Go to the forums and look at the patch notes.

The game has come a long way.

Combat, while not changed, has been balanced and tweaked a bit. The AI is a bit better at building ships and no longer gets economic and research boons unless you are playing at very high difficulty.

Really good graphics and a fluid UI, but the lack of combat in this game just kills it for me. I'll stick with Sword of the Stars 2

Yeah, same here. Space combat has been described as "he who has the biggest guns and/or biggest fleet typically wins". There is no space for tactical brilliance (or, ya know, gaming the AI ; ).

Pretty much. You're given I think 4 tactical options, which may or may not influence/cancel/enhance the other side's choices. Then you watch a cut scene and do it again. And again. Different weapons come into play at different ranges, so your torpedo boats are useless after long range for example unless you loaded up with other weapons.

Last time I played it I had every system in my empire pumping out dreadnaughts as fast as I could, I had statistically an unstoppable army according to the game, and I'd slaughter an enemy's like seven equivalent fleets and finally wear my fleet down. By the time I sent in reinforcements, the AI had rebuilt their endless armada of ships.

I quit the game and didn't go back. If it got better, it might be worth playing, but several months ago I felt like the AI was cheating or rubber-banding to catch up to my production levels.

I wonder if we'll ever get a GalCiv 3? I loved the ship building in GalCiv 2.

I have been on the fence about this one for a while. I sort of got burned out on space strategy for a while after playing Sins: Rebellion to death on release, but I think I'm ready to give it another go.
