MS Planning Annual "Windows Blue" Releases?

The Verge reports that Microsoft is moving towards more frequent OS updates with a product tastefully codenamed "Blue" they say will be a low cost, or even free release that will be standardized across desktops and phones to provide more frequent updates. This is based on hearing from "several sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans," and expands on a ZDNet story from this summer that suggested Windows Blue was more of a service pack. Their unconfirmed report says a licensed copy of Windows will be required to take advantage of this, and a lot of it seems to be focused on how apps will be sold through the Windows Store. Thanks nin.

It's not about "sales targets," it's about Apple releasing a new, cheap OSX every year and people salivating. The hype goes into overdrive, there are a billion articles covering new features, a billion articles reviewing it, and people generally flocking to Apple stores to punch each other in the face in order to buy it first.

While Microsoft will never have the rabid fans that Apple does, they can certainly create a new version of Windows event, much like those Apple events, to keep people talking and interested in a way that's difficult when you only release every 3-5 years.

That's an interesting book from a former Windows engineer...

I don't know what book you meant to link to, but The Old New Thing is nothing like you described. It's a book from a current Windows engineer with essays about design challenges in WIndows from roughly the Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 transition era, intermixed with amusing anecdotes.

The "essays" in the book are mostly early articles from his blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/.

When you can't sell Win 8 cheap, you rename it and give it away. And it still won't work. A turd is a turd, even if you call it "Turd Blue"

Here's how that meeting went at MS.

Random MS guy: "So, Steve, what do you think we should do next now that we've completely aggravated our Enterprise customer base?"

Balmer: "Oohh... Apple... uuhhh... ooooooohhhhHHHH!!!"

Random MS Guy: "Are you... rubbing that iPad on your dick?"

Anyway, yes, MS, that's what your enterprise customers want. A tastefully codenamed product that standardizes desktops and phones and that you will update every year, so that their IT department can spent its ENTIRE time just making sure all the software still works.

I guess in your Apple splooge fest, you're completely ignoring where you've been getting 90+% of your revenue from? I'm sure that's going to work out just fine.

It certainly looks like the industry is trying to force the desktop PC into becoming the "fixed" appliance that tablets, smartphones, laptops, and your toaster have always been. Shame.

I mean, the death of the custom built tower is still a ways off, but it is easy to see where this is going.

They really need to recognize that nobody wants their 'unified' OS idea.

(No referral links) That's an interesting book from a former Windows engineer who talks about how their entire business model is based on forcing licenses on businesses and the extreme lengths they go to do it. The Windows team was often forced to roll out new features and designs based entirely on sales targets. This sounds like they've dialed that up to 11.

Oh that's a GREAT idea - because people totally use their PC's exactly the same as they use their phones.

And on a related note, how are those Windows 8 reviews going for ya?
