That is because SB16 used FM MIDI which was crap. I did like how LucasArts used realtime changes in their MIDIs though like in Star Wars games.

Good old MIDI. I remember having to buy a Wave Blaster daughtercard for my SB16 ISA for better MIDI. But then it still didn't match Roland, MT32, GUS(?), etc.
