DOOM 3 BFG Edition Patch and GPL Source Code

The Bethesda Blog announces the promised release of the source code for the DOOM 3 BFG Edition under terms of The GNU General Public License. The id Software section on GitHub has the files along with an explanation of the legalities of using the source code, and additional restrictions besides the GNU GPL, including this condition: "This source release does not contain any game data, the game data is still covered by the original EULA and must be obeyed as usual." The same update also has details on a new patch that will automatically be provided for the game through Steam. Here are the patch notes:

NEW FEATURES

  • All projectiles cast shadows
  • Texture LOD bias added to menu options
  • Added option to force v-sync (instead of “smart v-sync”)
  • Adjusted default brightness value
  • Shadow casting projectiles added to menu options
  • Allow setting anti-aliasing up to 16x on Nvidia hardware. AMD/Intel cap is at 8x
  • Adjusted range of vertical sensitivity (allows you to lower sensitivity further than original implementation)
  • Added option to disable checkpoints
  • Allow left/right to enter resolution menu
  • Variable FOV settings options were added into the main menu
  • Added controller bind options
  • Added additional anti-cheat measures

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed blood splatter effects break after reloading save game
  • Fixed broken view nodal code that allowed players to see through the world by backing into a wall and looking up
  • Fixed weapon impact effects break after using the artifact (heart)
  • Fixed leaderboards to work across languages

The Doom 3 source code (id tech IV) has already been released, years ago I think. They have made changes to the engine code for the BFG edition and are releasing the changes now? The BFG edition is like a Game of the Year edition, with all addons (and Doom 1 and 2 included?) right?

What is going to be different from the first source code release of id tech IV?

This is nothing major (nothing too new) I think then.

Possibly, but the BFG edition also has re-done artwork, and any art assets pulled from the game would be against the GPL.
But the new lighting, sound, anything that is pure code could theoretically be back ported to the old doom. Doom 3 BFG though may have new entities that the old Doom 3 may not have had, so that would be a lot of work.
There has been surprisingly little activity in the Doom 3 (original) source code ports, as far as I know just iodoom3 and I don;t even think there are any public releases of that yet.

That seems to be most of the complaints I saw fixed. Good stuff. I'll buy it in a Steam sale someday for the new levels and then compare versions myself.

I'm not up on how this source code stuff works. But by releasing this, does that mean if you owned the original Doom 3, then got this source code and compiled it, you could use the original Doom 3 assets and resources with the new code to effectively get Doom 3 BFG edition for free?

nope, they did mess around with the assets in the BFG edition plus added a few more levels.

So, is it worth it now?

I have the original on the shelf collecting dust but unfinished... barely unplayed... I know... I know...
Its the same game, if you got bored with it, you will get bored with this one. It has nicer gfx and thats it.

actually there's mods that can make the game look better than what id released with their so called HD BFG version.

when someone says "this game is barely played", doesn't it mean that he does not usually play it? and wouldn't then "this game is barely unplayed" mean that he can't stop playing it?

in that case, yes, it should be worth stopping the game just enough to patch it.

"Added option to force v-sync (instead of “smart v-sync”)"

This one really annoyed me. I had to create an autoexec.cfg file to force true vsync with "seta r_swapinterval 2". I'm not sure why they thought it was a good idea to only include the "almost always on" vsync. Once it gets dynamically turned off in the game it's very noticable. At least to me it is.
