You should try reading books. You know, those things Kindles are supposed to be made for.
Bah! He reads web pages. It's good enough. [grin]

I love my Kindle Fire. I am forever watching movies and TV, surfing the web, and listening to music on it. Even if I didn't despise Apple, I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a reason why I'd choose the iPad mini over the Kindle; it has fewer/weaker features and costs more.

Notebooks/Laptops for me too. I never got into tablets. Even a netbook would do!

Anyone that wastes money on an ipad has a screw loose. They are so limited atm with what you can do with them. Give me a laptop any day in the week.

Masterful trolling, 10/10 would lol again.

With keyboard docking stations, mice, and even MS Office, tablets really are a viable option for school. I do a lot of online school, plus I deploy and/or am required to travel on short notice; a tablet with accessories would really lighten my load compared to my laptop.

I think I'm quite rational and the lady friend loves it for school and using it for studying.

You've got a bigger issue if you don't understand a demographic then suddenly they must have screws loose.

Pads are useless for school, the ipad even more so because it is so expensive. You cannot type a paper on one, which is kind of needed in a school setting. So if you wasted your money on one I feel sorry for you because you are really missing out.

I can do anything on a laptop you can do on a pad and then there are tons of things I can do on a laptop you just cannot do on a pad.

You can't do anything, sure, but some things you cannot do as well.

I fail to see why you can't fathom a world where people own both, and use both for the things they are best at. No one is forcing you to pick one over the other, though you seem to be doing that on your own...

My Android tablet is my ultra portable computer. I use it for light Web surfing, games and studying. I will also being using it for programming soon (AIDE app). It is my ereader and portable game player (the phone gets enough messages and calls that it's not as useful for that.) Watch movies and YouTube on the couch or just out and about. It holds a charge a lot better and long then my laptop and I have a CamelBak backpack that has a sleeve pocket that was supposed to be for a soft water bottle that holds the tablet perfectly. Throw it in and off I go.

Since I'm learning computer arts and programming I find it invaluable since I can follow along the lessons in the ebook/video without having to stop the video and/or minimize the current lesson to access the program needed. Having the lessons on top of the learning surface is really hard to study with I found.

Now, does this mean it replaces my laptop? No. In fact if I had to choose, I would choose the laptop first. But I feel it's a nice complement to the laptop. And this is something I always tell people when they ask me about buying a tablet that it doesn't do enough to replace a computer but it is nice.

Our iPad is a console for my kids. They fight over it, just like I used to fight with my siblings over the Nintendo when I was growing up. Definitely glad I have one.

I'm actually surprised at how many have sold. I don't really understand why they are so popular. If I traveled a lot on the train or a plane, or watched a lot of cable so I was on the sofa a lot, or spent a lot of time in cafes, or wanted my kids to play more games than they already do on the desktop, I could see owning one. But otherwise, I wonder how people are using them that make them must-have items. I see people using them less than optimally for sure: Using them to take photos at their kids' sporting events, listening to music (very unwieldy), etc.

You just described their popularity. A lot of people spend a lot of time traveling on train or plane, watching TV on the sofa, spending time in cafes, and letting their kids play games.

A lot of people.

My mom adores her iPad. She will use it somewhat interchangeably with her laptop. 90% of the time she'll sit on the couch reading the internet on her iPad, since it's better for that for her - lighter, quicker, etc. When she needs to do something a bit more intensive (e.g., type an email, buy something) she'll bust out the laptop.

For me, personally, the lack of proper tabs makes browsing on a tablet frustrating as hell, but even then I will keep my tablet near my TV. If I'm watching and something pops up that I want to look up (or, more recently, I find a new gun in Borderlands 2 with red text) I can grab it and pull up a wiki in 2 seconds flat. I can keep it next to the TV for about a week or more without charging it. My laptop needs to be constantly plugged in, and even when waking it from hibernating it takes about 120+ seconds to find and connect to the wireless. The tablet is always there, just begging for me to pick it up, instantly wake it and instantly be browsing in a subpar manner.

It must be nice in that little black and white world of yours where everyone else's needs and wants must either be the same as yours or completely ridiculous. I would imagine it makes coping with the world much easier to be able to simplify it in such a way.

Tablets and laptops are two totally different markets. It is not an either/or type of situation unless you personally are making it one for some reason.

My wife and I each have a desktop, a laptop, and a tablet. We tend to use all three at different times and for different purposes with very little in the way of overlap. She also has a smartphone which I can't be bothered with. My tablet does all the same stuff and has a screen my old eyes can actually read. Her job forces her to be more mobile than I am though, so a smaller device is a benefit. I like having a phone that is well...a phone. I am enjoying it while I can, everytime I go into the phone store it seems like that section of "just phones" is getting smaller.
