Since 90% of the complainers on this thread clearly have not read any of the copious details already released on this game, I suggest you start here:
www.robertsspaceindustries.com/
Then come back and post your thoughts when you actually know some of the facts. |

That is a big FUCK YOU from Chris Roberts to me and all other people who are truly space sim fans but dont really like MMOs. No, it's him making the kind of game he wants to make. It has nothing to do with "fuck you". I'm not wild about the mmo aspects either (I'm seriously burnt out on mmos), but I'm still curious as to what it'll turn into.
I'm not trying to single you out (at all), but the attitude we sometimes see these days (and believe me, it's not confined to Bluesnews), where, when someone does something someone else may not like (and it's somehow a personal slight), is getting out of hand.
The reality is that no product is perfect for everyone. And when you're trying to appeal to all of the flight/wing commander/space shooter/exploration/sandbox/online universe/man I'm hope there's a good single player in here crowd, it's entirely possible the end product may do a thing a two a certain subset may not like.
Off my soap box now.

Look people. I dont have anything against this game. I hope you all have tons of fun with it. Im just pissed as hell that Chris Roberts is finnaly making a space sim again and he is promising the world to ALL OF US but he is CLEARLY making an MMO.

Curiously, I was under the impression that the pledge level for my top-of-the-line ship included 'lifetime' insurance at no cost.
Not only does that pledge level seem to have increased by $20, but the insurance is only for 6 months.
Kickstarter is very clear on no changes to a pledge level once pledged, apparantly RSI isn't so clear.
Insurance against glitches and campers is a much needed item in PvP, I hope to get to the bottom of those two issues! |

Insurance and ships aren't cosmetic.
And he already said that private servers would be missing stuff.
And private investment almost always comes with serious strings. Since mmo/f2p type games are hot right now in investment areas, my guess is that $10+ mil private investment (which significantly outweighs all the crowdsourcing funding) comes with strings to push those kinda features.
Sure he may say its not an MMO or F2P, but boy does it share a lot of features with them. |

Some of you guys really need to read through the RSI site: it's not an MMO. There are no subscription fees. They *are* allowing for in-game micro-transactions to buy cosmetic items for customization, but, to paraphrase Roberts: everything in the game will be earned the old fashioned way--through dedication and skill.
People will be able to run their own servers and make mods.
It sounds like he is going to have an in-game Privateer-like economy, with sales of the client/server and "customizations" to fund upkeep.
It remains to be seen if that will realistically work on a financial basis. I hope it does, but gaming is so diluted right now, I fear this may be niche market. It's been almost a decade since I closed the book on a similar game, with a far bigger leg up (franchise-wise), and the numbers back then were bad when the market was far less...fractured.
But, who knows? Faith manages.
(Edited for typos; I'd blame auto-correct, but it was all me.)

I realize this is a game and everything but in single player when you get blown up to bits there is no 'respawn'...
Fucking MMO mechanics like these are annoying as hell and make me want to puke....

He doesn't need to raise an infinite amount of money, he only needs enough to make the game. Not only that a limited amount of money forces him to manage the scope of the project. Plus he has a private investor willing willing to toss in an extra 10 million or so. He has more then enough to make a complete game.
His original goal was 2 million lets not forget. He wasn't expecting to get 6.5/7 million. The project was scoped for a certain budget already.
At this point he's got enough to make a full game and they are planning on selling it retail after release so it's not like they need the money. The bulk of the game has essentially been paid for, now they have to struggle to actually build the thing.
Not only that they have recurring donations for people who want to fund the game throughout if you look at the tiers ($10/month). So if you want to fund the game on a regular basis just choose the monthly option until release. |

What happens when your insurance runs out, turned into a space janitor till you raise enough in game funds to buy another one? Only if you've failed to insure your ship and don't have the funds to raise a new one. It's like any other game with an in-game currency: don't spend it all at once and you'll usually be fine. If you've ever played Freelancer then you should have an idea of what to expect. |

It's a Thank You to those who pledged money for the game's development. Is a pledge ship different from a ship you would get from one of the packages such as digital bounty hunter? Because that one says 4 months ship insurance. That sounds like a significantly shorter span of time than forever.
Edit: Whoops you totally did not say it had insurance forever. My mistake!

| If there is ship insurance like EVE, is there also PVP everywhere like EVE? I stay away from EVE for that reason - I work 60-70 hours a week so I'm not at all inclined to spend a week getting something only to lose it in 30 seconds to a gate camper. If Star Citizen has the same risk I'll have to give it a pass as well. |

DangerDog wrote on Nov 21, 2012, 23:33: To those that are geeking out to this, what is "Ship Insurance"? Similar to Eve's ship insurance, you can buy insurance(which is usually not that expensive) so that if your ship is destroyed in combat, you'll get enough money back that you can replace that ship, minus the extras(weapons, armor, shields, scanners) you outfitted it with or any cargo you lost. This will apply to any ship in the game.
The only difference during the fundraising drive is that if you buy one of the pledge ships(say, a Hornet fighter) now, that ship will have free insurance(again, just the ship, not extra equipment) and hangar space forever. It's a Thank You to those who pledged money for the game's development.
Once the game ships though, even if you bought a pledge ship, if you buy a new ship in the game, you have to pay to insure it the same as any other player. |
