Miner Wars 2081 Beta on Steam

Keen Software House announces that the Miner Wars 2081 beta is now available on Steam in advance of the launch of this 6DOF shooter next week. The beta is open to preorder customers, and they say they say the game is now able to save games to the Steam cloud and that they are in the process of adding Steam achievements as well. Steam support is available for the game regardless of where they are purchased, and here's word how to activate your copy on Valve's service:

1) Get your Steam key: http://www.minerwars.com/SteamKeys.aspx
2) Open your Steam client; go to menu; click 'Games'; then 'Activate a product on Steam'
3) Type the key and wait until the game installs
4) Enjoy Miner Wars 2081

I hadn't followed it closely, but was looking forward to it from what I'd seen...

However hearing about always-on internet (for single player??), is going to make me take that one off the wishlist.

Steam I have no quarrel with, have pretty much my entire gaming library tied to it.

I believe steam is optional; however the fact they said no DRM back in early development and now have an always-on internet check even for single player isn't right. Hopefully they'll reverse that for single player and do something similar to Minecraft in that regard.

First they said NO DRM and then they added online only. And now Steam.

No, thanks.

Edit: don't get me wrong, Steam support is great if it's optional. I just don't want to support developers that go back on their word. Especially if they gave it while asking for money.
