Star Citizen Passes $4.2MM

A post on the Roberts Space Industries Website announces that Star Citizen has attracted more than $4 million in funding from fans eager for a new space combat game from the creator of Wing Commander. The post outlines additional stretch goals beyond that point, and a follow-up announces another system is unlocked, and says they now have stretch goals all the way to the $5 million mark. Finally, the latest update announces that having passed $4.2 million, they have climbed to the top of the crowd-sourcing mountain:

$4.2 million! Which means that Star Citizen is now the highest crowd-funded game project ever! You’ve earned this star system, and a lot more! Let’s go for $4.5! By the way: you guys are now unlocking systems faster than our artists can finish them… we promise we’ll add the missing concepts in the near future.

He's referenced 42 several times now, including the squadron name. I suspect it's a placeholder.

$5 million. I'm pretty impressed. Didn't realize that space sim fans were so plentiful (or rich). I threw my money at it as well so I'm hoping the final game delivers. Roberts is promising a lot so we'll see whether or not everything comes to fruition.

Thinking I might be able to scrap together $60 to get the Origin 300i before this ends but then I see there's one with a pirate ship WITH lifetime insurance. For a high-risk vessel that seems like a hell of a deal.

Sorry, this kickstarter stuff doesn't sound very significant to me.

Looking at the games I backed:

Double Fine: 3.3m
Wasteland 2: 2.9m
Shadowrun: 1.8m
Larry: .65m
Carma: .62m
Two Guys: .54m
DeadState: .3m
Eternity: 4m
HeroU: .32m (currently)
Star Cit: 4.5m

By my count, that's 19 million dollars of gamers money that didn't go into major publishers hands. And any one of them that leaves 19 million dollars on the table is a fool.
