AMD for Sale?

AMD has hired JPMorgan Chase explore options, including the sale of patents, and possibly the sale of the entire company, reports Reuters. They attribute this to "sources familiar with the situation," but also have the following statement from AMD confirming the possibility of selling off technology, but stating the company itself is not on the market: "AMD's board and management believe that the strategy the company is currently pursuing to drive long-term growth by leveraging AMD's highly-differentiated technology assets is the right approach to enhance shareholder value. AMD is not actively pursuing a sale of the company or significant assets at this time." Thanks nin via Gizmodo.

Yeesh, I hope AMD can pull through. These days, you don't even need all the power that intel provides for most apps. Even most games don't require gobs of proc power. And even though AMD procs suck vs. Intel, (formerly) ATI and nVidia are pretty much neck-and-neck. All those sales for both the next gen Playstation and XBox have to count for something in AMD's favor.

Well... I hope ATi gets sold off to someone other than nVidia. Even though I mostly run nVidia... the last thing we need is for them to become a monopoly.

I doubt that would even get past regulators to be honest. I thought I read an article recently that said that ATI was one of the only parts of the company actually turning a profit right now so I bet there will be plenty of suitors willing to pick it up. I hope AMD can turn things around. They gave Intel a good run for their money once and they need competition.

Would love to see Intel buy up the ATI division and then work on what AMD has started with the lower power options.

That way they could then profitably support the high end divisions R&D. Though, I don't know if intel is a great choice for driver support though =(
