Win8 Exclusive DirectX 11.1?

A recent forum post by Microsoft employee Daniel Moth indicates that DirectX 11.1 is exclusive to Windows 8, much the way DirectX 10 was not released for versions of Windows before Vista, saying it is integrated into the new version of the operating system. Here's word on where this stands right now: "DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista .... but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7." Neowin was told "we have nothing further to share" after contacting Microsoft for further comment on this. The biggest difference between DirectX 11.1 and DirectX 11 seems to be native stereoscopic 3D support, so this should not impact serious gamers anyway. Thanks VG247.

Aaaaand the strong arm tactics continue at Redmond.

This is a complete insult to those that purchased Windows 7 within the last year or so for a gaming machine. There is nothing wrong with their choice, and W7 is certainly not old enough for EOL treatment such as this. It's a deliberate devaluation of existing ownership in order to spur sales of the new risk they took. Nothing more. The flippant reply of "we have nothing further to share" says it all.

As long as we don't look at the textures too closely? (And by too closely I mean: from closer than 400 feet away?)

I suppose he could have decided Win8 was his last project and he was leaving after it shipped, but it always looks kind of bad when this sort of thing happens immediately after a major product launch. I also noticed that with his departure the two chief executives of MS' Windows Division are two young (and pretty) ladies. Good for them!

Yeah, or just install something like StartIsBack for Win8 and you can bypass the Metro Start screen completely. At first I didn't like Win8 either because of the whole Metro thing, but once I found that it is basically just another desktop window which can be bypassed, I didn't mind it so much.
It allows you to directly start the computer to the desktop?

Yep, all of those third party apps let you boot directly to the desktop and override the start button launching metro. At that point you're left with Windows 7 minus Aero plus a crappy flat theme.

I've seen several explanations. A couple of sites say he wasn't a team player, and needed to go, while another said he wanted Ballmer's job, and Ballmer told him to take a hike.

I still use Windows XP Pro. SP3 with its DirectX 9.0c.

Ya I have XP and 7, almost never load up Win7 - no reason to except for the occasional DX10 only game.

Btw. is this whole 3D thing with games picking up anytime soon or was it just another gimmick, fading out in obscurity?

I'm sorry but I am NOT going to sit with those goofy goggles on my head playing a game.

It will take game companies years to integrate 3D in their games and why bother it is more fluff than a needed feature.

Spot on. By the time anyone makes use of it - if they ever actually do - Win9 will be out and we'll be on DX12.

And we just 'might' be enjoying Half-Life 3 by then. Wink

On Linux.

We still use DX9 mostly thanks to your fuckery, MS. No loss here with not getting the decimal increase in DX11.

Oh wait, restore the Start menu via a mod, and it's Windows 7 again with a new task manager and pausable file copy.

Fixed that for you.
