A friend of mine returned his Surface after not even a week due to all of the compatibility issues with ARM apps and RTs inability to run desktop apps so *shrug*. Surface Pro might be great but I suspect the price tag will be bonkers.
Also uh of course they have backwards compatibility, that should be a given, not something they get credit for thinking was a good idea. |

I have win 8 installed on my machine for about 3 months now. I am a power user (.net Programmer) and gamer.
-fast
-rock solid Performance
-missing start menu -> dont care (win + X)
-all games work as in win 7
-Metro -> dont care
Two weeks ago we bought a Samsung ativ tablet with win 8 (x86) and now whenever I use an Ipad i'm thinking: how the hell can anyone do stuff with this apple garbage? Win 8 is not just Microsoft coming late to the tablet Party, it is crushing all the other android, iOS products out there.
Even Win RT is superior to an iPad (Network shares, multiple user profiles, file explorer out of the box, Docking apps)
In my opinion they did a hell of a Job merging all the "legacy" code with a Slick new tablet UI, but nobody seems to realise that providing backwards compatibility for millions of devices and applications is a big deal...

They sold a bunch of copies (like ~3mil) but it was for $15 so its no surprise. People were basically just buying it to disable Metro and treat it like a cheap copy of Windows 7. |

i think MS appreciates they need to get as many people onboard as possible or they're fucked.
among our demographic uptake isn't exactly skyrocketing, but 2% is honestly a lot more than i expected for october considering it was only available for 5 days. |

You can use whatever label you want but the fact is that they put ads in the main display of the default apps. Go look at the music app too, its full of ads. That's some tacky crap you would expect from a startup, not Microsoft. Metro is a hard enough sell without even more shit. Ads in the shitter are next, I'm sure someone is working on that somewhere.

| I thought next years Intel chips, next-gen were really going to drop the power down to ARM levels and then beat them up with performance? There is a counter argument that it may work the other direction. |

Really, Intel is more energy efficient per watt than ARM chips are at workload. The only place where ARM beats Intel is at idle, where both Intel and AMD are catching up very quickly. Some stuff here and here on it.
I don't see ARM for a gaming based PC anytime soon, it's kind of like cyrix chips back in the 90's, they were for everyone who wanted a simple PC on the cheap. |
