A Techdirt article looks at issues users are having with new Razer Naga mice, as there are complaints that its Synapse 2.0 software requires an internet connection the first time it's used, leading to the inevitable story of someone who could not use his new mouse because the authentication servers were down (thanks Brandon). They note a Facebook explanation from Razer saying this is not the case, and that the mouse will work out of the box, and the software requiring the internet includes added functionality to save profiles in the cloud (actually saying this reduces the cost of mice, which apparently were requiring ever-more flash memory for the convenience of portable settings). Techdirt refutes the claim that the mice "work perfectly well out of the box without Synapse 2.0," and the forum post that set all this in motion also notes that the Privacy Policy for this software seems surprisingly nosey: By using Razer Synapse 2.0 (“Synapse”), the Subscriber agrees that Razer may collect aggregate information, individual information, and personally identifiable information. Razer may share aggregate information and individual information with other parties. Razer shall not share personally identifiable information with other parties, except as described in the policy below.
Razer may use customer contact information provided by Subscribers to send information about Razer, including news about product updates, contests, events, and other promotional materials, but only if the Subscriber agrees to receive such communications. Except in the cases described below, Razer will not share personally identifiable information with any third party unless the Subscriber agrees to such disclosure in advance.
While provision of personally identifiable information remains entirely voluntary, Razer reserves the right to make access to certain value-added services or features conditional upon the supply of personally identifiable information. In such situations, the Subscriber will be given the option to decline use of the particular value added service or feature if he does not wish to furnish personally identifiable information.
In some situations, personally identifiable information the Subscriber inputs in connection with Synapse may be made searchable or otherwise available to other Subscribers (such as in certain public functions). Razer has no obligation to keep the privacy of personally identifiable information that is made available by a Subscriber to other Subscribers.
Collection of personally identifiable information may be out-sourced to associates under agreement with Razer. These associates may adhere to their own set of privacy policies.
Personally identifiable information will be processed and stored by Razer in databases hosted in secure locations. Razer has taken reasonable steps to protect the information Subscribers share with it, including, but not limited to, setup of processes, equipment and software to avoid unauthorized access or disclosure of this information.
Razer may allow third parties performing services under contract with Razer to access stored information but such access shall only be to the extent necessary to provide those services. In those instances, the third party will be bound by the terms of this Privacy Policy.
Razer may release personally identifiable information to comply with court orders or laws that require us to disclose such information, without the need of consent from the Subscriber.

| I would argue that they also make superb mouse pads. I have an eXact Mat and.. the difference compared to my previous mouse pads was stunning. So to me they make terrible mice compared to Logitech, but they make great mouse-pads. And before you mock me, with stunning I mean, the mouse literally glides with 0 resistance (At least on the "Speed" surface) the difference to surfaces on all other mouse pads I tested, both cheap and expensive, was like night and day. And I have a wired mouse so (MX518 and all) the low weight and 0 resistance makes it feel like you are moving over air not a rough surface. |

The tech is out and you cannot control everything. There are 3D printers, which are just using sand, software and focused sun light to "sinter" objects. Cheap and easy to build, the controlling software is Open Source. Ideal for underdeveloped countries. Maybe 3D printers will be controllable in the western countries. But not for long, not for all eternity.
Heck, even the once mighty christian church couldnt prevent the crossbow from making powerful knights on horses an easy practise target. The church used to excommunicate everyone who used or built a crossbow. With little to no effect at all. Because the crossbow was way to useful. And the moment 3D printers become useful for the masses, for private households, for small companies ... no DRM, no regulation can stop that. History repeats itself, a new technology will change human society.
I dont know if this change will be good or bad from our current point of view. But it will happen! Common people are not countries, and I've already seen multiple articles about restricting the tech. There are a lot of things that could happen but won't because big business and it's henchmen the Government stifle that shit in ways we won't ever know about. I know it's possible to build them, but most people can't even format a computer.... |

I'm done with Razer anyway, after my last mouse broke under warranty, and it took six months and three defective replacements in a row, costing a stack of money to return, along with insinuations that I was trying to con them, before I finally got a working mouse.
Razer has gone to hell. |

3D printers are going to be crippled. They will end up in a similar way to scanners, where if you try to scan in a bank note it will block it. Copyright holders will pressure lawmakers into implementing draconian legislation that will do nothing to benefit consumers and everything to benefit large corporations. Politicians in the US will attack them on the basis that they're 'socialist', because Americans don't seem to have a clue what socialism or communism are all about - only that they're bad.
Continuum's "corporate congress" is actually pretty accurate. |

There is always one anti-Obama idiot who has to post their fanatical ideals that have no bearing on the subject at hand. Good job ass-hat. On to the subject; I've owned both a mouse and keyboard by Razor. The mouse was one of their first models before they became so popular and it lasted me about 5 years, which for me is a long time. I usually go through a mouse every 6 months (I'm looking at you Logitech) and keyboards about as often. The keyboard, which was bought last year didn't last but 2 months (I have kids, kids spill/drop/bang stuff) I can definitely tell a difference in quality between their older equipment and their newer stuff. Sadly, Razor has, like a lot of companies, gotten complacent and their quality has gone down while the price has gone up. I miss the Razor of old. |

I own and have owned many Razer products. I do enjoy them, but they do take some getting used to and contain many nuances. They also lean towards needing maintenance like a performance automobile, with known issues that can kill the hardware pretty rapidly. The software isn't much better, and many times I had to run the hardware "stag."
That being said, their "entry-level" stuff, while overpriced, is still quite nice, and some of their more expensive hardware (also overpriced) just fills the right niche (especially the BlackWidow). I admit it's a bit of an addiction and I feel halfway an Apple fanatic when I buy their stuff. The key is getting their entry-level goods when on sale, as their basic stuff (arctosa + abyssus) can be affordable and outside the Logitech cartel's influence.
As for this idea...can't say I didn't see it coming, and can't say it's not ridiculous. It's true that professional gamers make surprising use of the extras (more so than I'd like to accept) but this is still a bit too much. Keep in mind that in some places (Asia), this is not only not unusual but was kind of desired. It is strange for the "Western" gaming crowd but then again, much of that is console-based, the rest sponsored, so it's just a different world.

holy jesus. The entire Elite game was programmed into 22k how much fecking space do you need to store a few integers and floats?
More like track peoples PC specs and sell it as anonymous market data
edit: my mx518 is still running after all these years - the G15 I bought with it finally died (the paint fell off most of the keys outside of the free warranty replacement.) ive changed the usb cable myself but that is about it. |
