Battlefield 4 Rumors

NeoGAF translates rumors from a Chinese website called ChipHell that claims to have details on Battlefield 4 leaked from EA China, as unlikely as that sounds. The details they list seem plausible, which proves nothing, so feel free to take this with a grain of MSG. This goes so far as to include a precise release date, saying the next installment in the military shooter series is due on October 23, 2013 (though the game's beta test is only slated to commence a month before, at the earliest). Thanks Joao.

I was joking about the WiiU being "Next Gen" when I said "in a couple weeks".

According to some, the next generation of consoles is released in a couple weeks.

I misread your comment and thought you were saying all the next gen consoles were rumored to be coming in a few weeks, not just the WiiU ...sorry 'bout that...

Personally I stick with what I said, regardless of what hardware they'll use the graphical jump won't be half as big as the jump was from the PS2 to the PS3 generation. Financially, with Sony on a bad spot and MS not wanting to spend to much, it makes perfect logic that the next hardware will be the equivalent of a 6670 in graphical power or something equivalent or slightly more powerful. They know the WiiU is weak in terms of graphics.

I just find it very hard to believe that any company that puts in years of research and development and hundreds of millions of dollars is going to just 'settle' for a small jump in power/graphics. They're not looking to put out a console for the sole purpose of saving money in the long run. They're doing it to win a war, as such. That's the reason it's considered a console 'war', each one is trying to upstage the other. Yes, they know the WiiU isn't much of a threat in power terms, but maybe in playability and first-party games it might be. I'm sure without a doubt they have eyes in the other camp telling them what the other has on the table. MS infiltrates Sony and vice-verse. I just don't think it's as simple as throwing some PC parts in the box, lining up some exclusive games and releasing. It's more complicated than that and it has been each generation...

Here's the thing, a 6670, from what I understand from reading the WiiU specs, is already quite a beefy upgrade from the WiiU graphics processor. Besides, this 6670/7670 rumor came not only from the xbox camp but also the PS one so when two different sources come out with the same rumors I tend to lessen the grain of salt I give to it.

From a financial point of view, if they go for anything beefier than a 6670 or equivalent they will be shooting themselves in the foot. The xbox360 was sold for a loss for quite a long time and its hardware was less expensive at the time than anything the next generation will bring.

I hear it will have guns. And that it still won't be as massive scale as Planetside 2.

This rumor of the next-gen sporting a 6670 is a thing I like to call complete bullshit. No way any console is using off-the-shelf PC parts. Yes, they use parts similar but every new console has had it's own graphics chip developed especially for it. Maybe a derivative of the 6670? I find that doubtful as well. Each gen of console is meant to be a huge leap forward from the one before, which is why console's have 10+ year lifetime cycles. The PSX to the PS2, the PS2 to the PS3, while a smaller jump was still rather large. Just because most games on the PS3 haven't taken advantage of it's horsepower doesn't mean it's not there. The Xbox, while a little different in terms of where the horsepower is focused (ie more CPU dependent than GPU, though the GPU is no slouch), is the same way. The difference between the Xbox and 360 is sizable. They haven't squeezed everything out the current gen yet, especially when it comes to the PS3. Probably because the PS3 is apparently so much harder to develop for. I mean, look at the jump in quality in the HALO series each time, HALO3 to REACH to HALO4. Hell, look way back to the amazing power they pulled out of the SNES in it's twilight years. Everyone is looking to next-gen but there's still some left in the current hardware. And because of that, I think the next-gen systems are going to be FAR more powerful than what's been rumored. They have to be.

As for them coming out in a few weeks? It's nice to dream...The first PS4 dev kits just got sent out and they're not even on the hardware itself, just a box with similar spec. We have some ways to go until release, guys. Trust me on that...

I agree with you completely about what Sony and Microsoft will pack in spec-wise with next gen. Both Microsoft and Sony know that they can basically eliminate a 3rd party from being a major contender simply by having their systems be a good chunk beefier than Nintendo's. As a result they guarantee more exclusives for themselves than any other strategy, as developers will tend to do the same thing they did with the Wii and avoid porting most games over at all. Nintendo is going to have a really tough time, even with it's die-hard fans always buying their new consoles. I hope they get it together soon because Nintendo is an invaluable asset to all gamers.. even if they do make stupid decisions sometimes.(okay.. a lot)

If true--hopefully they get it right this time. Only one person in the clan bought and plays BF3. The rest left after the beta--(activate fanboy flame shield)--just too much run,gun and die and consolitus desease.
The only way to get it right is to develop it exclusively on the PC.
It did look nice though.

I would like to believe that, but it hasn't worked out that way from the other franchises EA has forced into a yearly cycle.

Feel free to check the number of people playing different games.

http://www.gametracker.com/search/bf2/1500/?sort=c_numplayers&order=DESC

I guess you could still say multiplayer still exists for BF2 but the bulk of players left the game behind.

Yes you can still play many older multiplayer games, but the numbers definitely shrink faster now than they used to. We're well beyond the days of extreme longevity with the likes of Quake 2, Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1942/2.

My bullshit meter is pinging pretty hard. Regardless, my only question is how long before they shut down bf3. I've got $100 invested in that now.

It'll shut itself down when people quit playing, most will switch to BF4.

The cycle for multiplayer longevity is getting shorter and shorter.

People are still playing Battlefield 2. So I really don't buy that. The longevity issue is the publishers shutting down all these new fancy ALWAYS ON DRM schemes / integrated social features that no one else wants.

You can't look at it as an investment, anymore than playing a round of golf for $100 is an investment. You pay for the experience and then move on.

yeah, unless you consider the WiiU next generation then no. BF4 could be a launch title for PS4, xbox(whatever the call it).

Huh, that would get everyone by surprise. However I don't expect the next gen of consoles to be the huge step that, say, the PS2 generation was to the PS3 one. If the rumors of the consoles using a 6670 for its graphical powers are true, I fear these consoles will not do half as well as the PS3 and Xbox360 have. And if you think about it in economic terms, the 6670 makes perfect sense since anything else would put the consoles into a rather prohibitive price point both to produce and to sell.

If this is anywhere close to true, 1 year cycle development? That makes the BF series as bad as the CoD series in terms of development time.

Also, Oct 23 and coming out for both the new generation of consoles? If the rumor has any base on fact then it means the next generation of consoles will be out before Oct 23.

According to some, the next generation of consoles is released in a couple weeks.

And besides that, it will have been 2 years @ Oct 23rd 2013 since BF3 was released.
