Maybe the takeaway lesson is girls/women should play a better game than Halo. Natural Selection players (like myself!) are a far classier breed.

Yeah, but I'd rather have all these anonymous asshats banned anyway Remains to be seen whether MS has the backbone to actually enforce it though, and making the internet a place that does not require a thick skin is imo a goal worth striving for.

Also it really is a special kind of hell when it comes to Xbox-Live Voice chat. You can not compare that to the Internet as such, there people are not just anonymous but there is no public log of their actions. Meaning a community has absolutely 0 corrective power, and this is why the Internet is not a place where you encounter "random misogynistic rants from anonymous idiots" every 30 seconds. Unless you go intentionally looking for them ;p

As a new yorker who has heard it all on the streets, there's a difference between pointless crude language (which is low class but it will never die out in any century) and the crazed non-stop hate-speak that comes out of people's mouths on XBOX LIVE. Anything that can ban folks who talk like that is fine with me.

I have to agree.

As harsh as it may be, something like that should apply to Steam and several other matchmaking systems (Battlelog, Autolog, etc..) and forums as well. There are surely a lot of female gamers around but due to the constant jerks on the web they appear a minority because they don't dare ever mentioning or revealing it.

So, kudos to 343 Industries, and in this case MS

It's the internet. If you can be offended or scared off by random misogynistic rants from anonymous idiots you need to grow a thicker skin. Besides, I doubt this will be in full force for very long. I've heard this type of "we're declaring a zero tolerance" policy speak from Microsoft about Live before. Shortly after they realize that it's half their customers being anonymous asshats just because they can, they back off. And frankly it just wouldn't be Halo MP if someone wasn't calling me a c*nt every thirty seconds.
