I find it pretty disgusting that this is just now getting put into place. I had naively assumed this had been in place since, well, the first cell phone was sold. Makes sense though, carriers make a lot of money from people paying off-contract rates to replace stolen phones, and also make money from providing service to the stolen phones.

If anyone still thought capitalism was good for society... I see this has AT&T, Verizon, et. al. having stolen millions of dollars from their customers for years and now begrudgingly complying with an extremely reasonable request after ignoring it for years. Fuck those assholes.

Actually, there did used to be a stolen cell phone database at ATT Wireless.
Not ATT of today, post Cingular buyout, but the original ATT Wireless.
For TDMA phones.
Never was carried over to the GSM ones.

Protip: Capitalism is good for society. This is a lack of consumer protection laws that americans seem to have a problem with, and laws not protecting consumers.

Indeed. The answer to some people abusing capitalism isn't to scrap capitalism, it's to fix capitalism. In particular, stop letting the people who do this abuse trick the general population into thinking that corporations are more important and more worthy of freedom than the people and their elected government.

But no, that's socialism, which is bad. These same guys said so, so it must be true - I mean, why would they lie? It's not like they have anything to gain with the small exception of everything.
