World of Tanks Patched

Wargaming.Net announces the release of update 8.1 for World of Tanks, adding the promised British armor to the European edition of the free-to-play MMO shooter, and saying it will come to the North American edition of the game tomorrow. Word is: "The newly added national tech tree contains 22 finest models from the Royal Tank Corps across three main tank classes. World of Tanks Update 8.1 will be available on October 31 for the European players and on November 1 for the American community."

Really wish the Mechwarrior Online Devs would take some time on WoT. The visceral experience of having your tank crash through a building, smashing into an enemy and knocking it about, and then putting a 105mm round through the commander's hatch just can not be beat. Sure they are two different games, genres, experiences, etc., etc., but the "cool" factor in WoT is just plain missing from M:O.

I play World of Tanks and MechWarrior Online. It's clear MWO has taken a lot of the basics from WoT, but I think they really screwed the pooch on any sense of true progression. WoT immediately gives you choice of a few different tanks where you can compete on a relatively level playing field, and then after only one battle, you're upgrading -- progressing. Then maybe 5 battles later, you can unlock the next tank.

Of course this routine grinds to a halt (or halts to a grind?), but that's beside the point. Once you hit the grinding brick wall, you either still enjoy tanks or you're done with it. Contrast this with MWO where you hit a brick wall in the first game. Then you must play some 20-40 battles to be able to afford your first "real" mech. Invariably, newbies will make a bad choice and buy the cheapest mech and continue the brick wall experience where you get your face ROFLstomped by 8 man pre-made teams, and your mech continues to be next to useless.

They just need a proper tech tree duplicating WoT's, and throw in some actual matchmaking, and they'll have a good chance of continuing to attract players and rake in the cash.

Until then, I'll stick with WoT
