Op Ed

The PA Report - Without iOS and Android support at launch, Microsoft’s Smartglass is as good as dead. Thanks nin.
On Friday, when the feature goes live, only Surface owners will be sure to have access to SmartGlass in the way it was intended, limiting the feature to a tiny amount of possible users. It’s not interesting enough to be a selling point for the new tablets, and by trying to keep the initiative locked into its own devices Microsoft is ensuring a lack of developer support. There may be gamers who own a 360, Kinect, Dance Central 3, and a Surface tablet, but not many of them.

He takes a relatively small salary for someone in his position. Only 620K a year(double that if he earns a bonus). He's a steal at that price I guess.

Yeah and he's costing the shareholders billions. Some bargain.

This might be a stupid question but what is Smartglass exactly?

Imagine if you were to poop on your hand, and carry it around with you. You could have poop on your cell phone. You could wipe it on your keyboard. And on your exbox, or tablet. Everywhere you went, you'd have poop. Brown Town, All Around.

That's Microsoft's future!

Ok, I lulzed hard at that! Hah!

He MUST have dirt on the rest of the board. There's no way he wouldn't have been ousted otherwise.

Anyway, yet another solid idea from Microsoft. :-headshake-:

Sound confusing, redundant and unnecessary?

Yes, yes it does. If the press is asking themselves these questions, how does that not alert MS to the fact that, you know, MAYBE this actually IS confusing, redundant AND unnecessary?

From: http://screencrush.com/smartglass-movies-tv/

"SmartGlass, despite its catchy name, is actually not a new type of material but actually an app that you download to your smartphone or tablet. It will be available on a variety of platforms from iOS and Android devices and will connect your device to the Xbox 360. And as you’re watching a compatible movie or a TV show, your SmartGlass enabled device essentially becomes a second remote control. Sound confusing, redundant and unnecessary? Hold on, there’s more…

During it’s keynote address, Microsoft used HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones‘ (available on Xbox 360 via HBO GO) as an example. As an episode played on screen, a SmartGlass tablet displayed a 3D map of Westeros, detailed character genealogy, commentary from the episode’s writers and director and much more. Think of it as a HUD for your movies and TV.

SmartGlass works for movies as well. Microsoft used ‘School of Rock’ as an example. Curious choice, but OK. The tablet pops up character information as the character enters a particular scene. And let’s say you like ‘Anchorman’ but only want to watch the scenes with Brick Tamland – you can skip ahead to scenes that only feature that character. And if you have to run to work, you can swipe the movie onto your tablet, watch during your commute, then swipe back onto your TV when you get home at night.

Now movies and TV are not the only thing that SmartGlass is useful for. You’ll be able to use it to work with your favorite video games. SmartGlass, for example, will allow you to draw up a play in Madden ’13 with your touchscreen and immediately use it in the game. It will also work with Internet Explorer, now available on Xbox 360, making your tablet or phone a powerful mouse.

This is just the beginning of what SmartGlass can bring us and as more partners come on board with Microsoft to develop unique content. The app doesn’t launch until this fall giving Microsoft and its team plenty of time to figure out exactly what to do and us plenty of time to wonder when we’ll finally be able to use it."

Silly smartphone software for remote display/control, probably going nowhere as its totally dependent on Windows 8 phones selling in any volume and having a gaming audience.

Well, the way it works is that only Windows 8 devices can communicate with the TV, but the TV can communicate with anything, including iOS and Android.

The overall thought is that, if you're watching a movie on Netflix, the Smartglass can show you additional information. If you're playing a game it can show you the map (like the WiiU.) If you're watching sports it can show you stats.

The mistake is that, if I have my tablet out while watching something, I'm using the table to distract me from whatever is on the TV (or, more likely, using the TV as background noise.) I never have both out if I'm paying full attention to the TV. And I wouldn't want more information unless it was something I wanted to pay full attention to.

This is kind of dumb, though. Of course they're using Smartglass just for their tablets. May it kill the technology? Yeah. But they only really care about it as a way to move their stuff. The 360 moves well enough on its own. It's Windows tablets that this was designed to move.

The other option would be to do what Google does and launch something on multiple devices then pull it from some.
