Nihilistic Becomes nStigate Games

The Nihilistic Software Website announces that the company is reorganizing, and will cease to exist as it has for 14 years. In its place, they have reformed as nStigate Games, a new company focused on downloadable, on-line, and mobile games. Here's word:

So is this newsworthy? Well, honestly it probably isn’t, except that we are making this transition without any planned layoffs or leaving any debts behind. Nihilistic will fade into the sunset the way it started; a collaboration of talented folks dedicated to transparency and respect for employees. Over the next couple months we’ll get leaner as some of our talent finds new homes, and emerge as a smaller and more focused company.

The future for nStigate is yet to be written, but the history of Nihilistic is coming to a close. We thank all the people who have worked here over the last 14 years. It’s been a privilege and a joy to serve our players for the past years. We love what we do, and we love it when you guys like it. Thank you for playing.

Huh, I'd thought they'd gone the way of the dodo years ago. I used to hang out on their forums quite a lot, and when they closed those and then SC:Ghost got cancelled, I figured that was it.

I had no idea they were still around. Vampire:Redemption was a pretty good game, but that's about the only game of theirs I've ever played, I think.

I'm really surprised Nihilistic is still around. They haven't made many games since they started up 14 years ago and none of the games they've made have been critical or financial successes.

Only if you consider a User score of 87, for 12 year old game, as really bad. Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption

These guys and gals are one of the few developers EVER, that used there own money to make a patch for their game, because activision are a bunch of freaking ouchbags and wouldn't pay for a much needed patch. And still TO THIS DAY, they built the best example of Masquerade PnP computer multiplayer game.

Nihilistic Software's Vampire: The Masquerade -- Redemption Post Mortem

Irrc, they said Ghost was a very good game and personally I would take Nihilistic's word over blizzard, any day.

So the only reason this is "newsworthy" is because they are accomplishing it without screwing anyone over? Shouldn't the reverse be true?

And what's with the "we're turning out the lights" conclusion there? Isn't this effectively just a name change?

I know their history goes back a ways but I honestly can't remember a game this company made that was very good. I seem to recall Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption being considered really bad (though my ex really enjoyed it), Starcraft Ghost was cancelled and all their recent stuff has been really awful. The Resistance Vita game was an embarrassment. In the AAA space, only the absolute best of the best even have a chance at success and Nihilistic doesn't appear to be. Hopefully they can find more success in mobile but given their quality track record and that mobile's becoming just as hard to make money in, I wonder.

Damn, never understood why these guys turned their backs on PC gaming, to the thankless world of console and mobile gaming.
