No, it's fine.
Edit: to elaborate on that, it's just like any version of Windows. Some parts work well while others don't. Even the venerated XP and Win 7 are full of the same half finished and clunky parts. That's Windows. |

Considering Vista SP2 would never install on my previous Vista PC, its probably a good thing updates aren't in a SP format.

Fuck me...
If you don't have a Library created with music like I didn't, you can open up music files directly from the File Picker by clicking Open or Play Something, which is pretty cumbersome though:
So gently caress that, I needed to add some to the Library. To do that, clicked on "Tell me More".
...which then opens up a Metro IE10 browsing session telling you how...except it wants to be opened up in the desktop version of IE10.
So I oblige, click the button and open it up in the desktop. You get the exact same page, but at least you can follow the instructions now as it's directing you to perform desktop actions, just like Win7 with adding your folder to the Library.
And there are people actually DEFENDING this horseshit.

I found this pretty amusing, some guy was asking how many ads are in the default interface at SA and someone else did an analysis The Windows 8 Adbox Experience
Sometimes I wonder if they bothered to dogfood this thing at all because Windows 8 in general feels a lot like a working prototype.

Some people are obviously better than others, but you're right things tend to be harder when people can't be bothered trying to retain any of the info given to them. It doesn't frustrate me though. That's just the way some people are. |

In my case, I just got tired of repeatedly explaining the same thing to my parents or aunts/uncles/neighbors.
They wouldn't use cut and paste more than once every few months, so they'd call me asking how to do it because they'd forget. You have kid gloves the first 3 times, but after a while you just sigh and start getting short with them. I actually made cheat sheets showing the 3 main ways to cut and paste, and they'd call asking which to use.
These were people, at the time, in their 50s. All have iPads now, happy to finally have something they don't think will blow up in their faces. They still kind of worry.
The best bad computer user story I have is my old neighbor. He was handy so my parents traded his handiwork skills for my computer skills. He'd call me over to fix his slow computer and be all scotched up when I got there. I'd spend hours meticulously deleting all the crap from it. He'd smile, glazed over but happy it ran, then say "hey, let me show you something cool," open up the browser and go to a bookmarked porn site. I'd see all the stuff I just removed coming right back on. I tried once to explain the connection, but he was always boozed up and never followed, so eventually I just gave up. |

Plenty of people out there are too afraid of possibly blowing their computer up to do anything even as rudimentary as cut and paste. They're convinced they'll somehow change a setting that makes the computer never turn on again.

I find it equally amusing that the slightest complaint isn't possible without being accused of saying THE SKY IS FALLING BECUZ OF START BUTAN. No, the complaints were not addressed in any manner, they range from lack of innovation to concerns about store, advertisements in the default operating system apps and so on. Trying to pass it off as its better for the little people is just amusing and a complete straw man, as if they were banging down Microsofts doors begging for this stuff in the first place. As for what is and isn't intuitive, that's subjective and all I can say is that we'll see. Poor discoverability certainly won't help with public perception here and it's one of the largest complaints leveled at Windows 8.

What sheer luck that you personally observed this and it just happens to coincide with your own opinion on the matter. I've personally observed the complete opposite, I guess we're at a stand still now.
The complaints about Windows XP were different, as XP was a much larger overall shift and had many issues at release ranging from poor driver support and app compatibility problems.

as to the complaints that have apparently been addressed, all i've seen here on blues is, yes, essentially hyperbolic fear and complaints about the UI, and a refusal to see how this will improve life for most people, particular the poor normies.
perhaps this is where you and i are different. my day to day drudgery sees me in contact with people who, after years of using a computer, cannot copy and paste a link. the act of holding a mouse button and dragging over words and right clicking for a context menu and selecting copy is second nature to us because of who we are; we're reading blues news for a reason, but don't convince yourself that it's intuitive.
the reaction from this extremely large population that i've personally seen thus far has been quite positive. if you haven't had the benefit of such first hand observations then that is unfortunate and we will just have to agree to disagree. time will tell, just as it did with the much derided windows XP which had practically the same puerile "sesame street operating system" insults present in this thread leveled at it 8 years ago because it dared to be easier to use.
