Loot Drop Drops Kickstarter

The Kickstarter Page for SHAKER admits defeat for Loot Drop's recently announced old school RPG from Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall. The project attracted under a quarter of its funding goal as it passed the half-way mark, causing them to apologetically give up, for now:

Ultimately, our pitch just wasn't strong enough to get the traction we felt it needed to thrive. Sure, it may have made it. We could have fought our way to a possibly successful end. In reading your feedback and talking it over internally, however, we decided that it made more sense to kill it and come back with something stronger.

In game design, mercy killing is the law.

So, please accept our thanks and apologies in equal order. Expect something more soon.

If talking about him, usually in a degrading way, is making us his bitch -- then yeah. Somehow I don't think that's what he had in mind.

But that was like 10 years ago?

When someone says he's going to make you his bitch, you take it personally.

Considering how, this many years later, people are STILL talking about it . . .
In a way, he has made everyone his bitch.

Well, and if the game had been a runaway success we'd all be saying, "Well, the game certainly made me it's bitch" or something...

If we celebrate the classics from 10 + years ago (and we do), we also remember the failures.

?? Why does everybody here take the unfortunate Daikatana marketing so personally?

It was tacky and smacktalk, and they didn't bring anything game wise to back it up. Quite the opposite, in fact...

Because it was meant personally? *shrug* I never got why people got mad over insulting their mothers. Like the person had ever met their mother...

Yes, I was being rude.

It was intended more as a dig at Romero's famous line than a dig at Brenda... but interpret it however you wish.

Weird, you see most of these projects get a TON of funding in the last 2 weeks....surprised they shut it down.

This is what I was going to say. Defense Grid 2 languished at about 70% until the final day when a huge push got it over the top.

Its one of those I'll dump her before she dumps me so I look better things...

When you bring an unprofessional pitch, you don't get the cash. A drunk in a bar could have made a stronger kickstarter on a dirty napkin.

Zero details, then it seemed like they had to create some on the spot. Shockingly, people won't give you money for nothing sometimes, especially when John Romero's on the project.

Kickstarter just made Romero its bitch.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I'd have backed it for $15...

...If Brenda blew me...

...in front of Romero...

...so I could gleefully make a "who is whos bitch comment"...

...then again... maybe a $15 pledge would have been too much.

What if Romero blew you in front of Brenda...?

Overall that's kind of a weird comment to make about her...

I think the big difference is that Double Fine can point to titles they've released in the last decade that people love. The same can't be said for Romero and crew.
Yep, Double Fine has a track record of staying together and making great games over the last ten-plus years. This team that Brathwaite, Hall, and Romero have built don't really have a proven track record of making good games together.

I'm not surprised. When you begin a Kickstarter without a name for your project, you're in trouble.

Except this is precisely how the Double Fine Adventure project was started.

Maybe they can get in on the ground floor of 3D Realm's new pyramid scheme, err I mean investment opportunity.

FWIW, there is a glitch in the KS software that is preventing them from shutting it down....

Not surprising that this hasn't exactly set the world on fire. It just seemed like it was potential funding in need of a game instead of a potential game in need of funding.
