See, now that's a good question, haha.
I'm telling you, though, they wouldn't risk the company on something they did not believe in.
But it's certainly possible they believe in something terrible. Like I've said, I haven't used Windows 8 and, though I don't think it can be nearly as bad as everyone here says (few things ever are, Doom 3 being among them), I am in no rush to put it on my desktop.
I will almost definitely buy a Surface Pro, though. If the battery life is decent. |

MS is arrogant enough to think whatever they push on consumers will be eaten up. They don't think this will flop.
And they are big enough, a single windows flop wouldn't kill them (regardless of hardware). They've had windows before basically flop (pretty much every other windows version in fact).
AND even if almost no one uses it, this won't fail. It will have sales similar to other releases (I've already gone over the reasons why in this thread and others). MS has such a nice system setup, they can make similar sales numbers selling licenses even if no one actually uses their latest version. |

People here keep assuming Microsoft is incredibly stupid. If Microsoft knew that Windows 8 was a flop they would not release their first hardware under that label. They would not risk tainting not only Windows but their own Microsoft name for an area they hope to be big players in.
They wouldn't make the term "Microsoft Tablet" a complete joke.
They've made bad decisions, but if they've already decided Windows 8 is a flop then continuing with the Surface wouldn't just be bad, it'd be suicidal.
So no, they do not think Windows 8 is a flop. They think it's the next big thing. They also think that, outside of enterprise, traditional laptop and desktop form factors aren't going to be around for long. |

Why would they release something they know will flop and give it this massive a marketing campaign? Why would they build their own hardware? Why would they have all their OEM partners dive right in? Why would they totally change their business model?
You put a release you know will flop out to die. You do not build hardware for it for the first time in company history.
This isn't the Kin. This is the future of their company. If this flops, the company flops.

You stop using a technology when there's something superior. There's a reason that MacOS, KDE, Gnome, etc all use a similar style of desktop as Windows, and that's because it's an efficient one for humans to use. Exactly. I haven't heard a single reason why people should adopt this. It is pretty telling that the most anyone can say about it is that its good for average computer users without going into any detail about what that means. How are these people not being served already? What does this give them that existing versions of Windows & Apple products don't already? Why should people bother adapting to something that is arguably less functional? They get email, instant messaging, news and facebook already through phones.
This isn't a big innovation or something. There is no compelling upgrade here. It is Microsoft playing catch up to Apple and doing so in a way that forces users to adopt something that has little payoff for the effort.
As an enthusiast I'm not exactly happy with it either. Microsoft built its base on customization and choice. If I install Windows 8, what do I get for it except less options? I get to install Classic Shell and end up with shittier versions of built in applications like the Wi-Fi one. It's hard to even call this a decent iteration as it advances so little. |

I have to agree with some of the posters here who said that is in some ways connected to a hardware push.
Remember when the mouse came out? DOS was king and Windows 3.1 was sort of erm eh? What?
Although I dont see exactly how the desktop can change much. I really dont know how a touchscreen is better then a Keyboard Mouse combo.
I havent seen any peripheral devices that would be good for the Metro interface and unless MS (or somebody else) comes up with a viable alternative for Mouse + KB combo this vision of theirs is going to end up down the tubes, at least for the desktop environment.
Cool things do come to mind though. A 'touch' programmmable peripheral, sort of like a keyless keyboard only with a ipad quality (or better) touch surface could be cool for metro and apps and what not...but I havent seen one in the stores yet...  |

Except when buying a new desktop or laptop with it pre-loaded. At least some people will buy them without paying much attention to the OS version. Not sure if that counts as "willingly" though... |
