I'd say that major publishers like EA, Activision, etc. are living proof that consumers will pay for crap. Reality TV, Walmart, et al. We live in a world where consumers not only pay for crap, they wholly embrace it and demand it. I think back 20 or 30 years as a kid and there were never dollar stores, everything made in China, etc. How far we've fallen. |

"Consumers won’t pay for crap." Doesn't mean EA will stop trying to sell it.

| There is an entire industry predicated on getting consumers to pay for crap: they call it marketing. Any product, even a crappy one, properly marketed will get people to happily pay for it. They may not be happy with it for long but by then the company selling them the crap already has their money and doesn't really care. |

I laughed when after reading "Consumers won't pay for crap" my eyes moved along and saw "Electronic Arts".

He's partially correct.
Consumers WILL pay for crap - but most won't pay for much or for very long.
Regardless, that's not a good model for monetizing social gaming.
Even still, there's a bit of a learning process going on with the social/casual gaming space, so ultimately developers and publishers will have to figure out the particular cost structure of developing a social game are as well as figuring out what people will be willing to pay for (and how much). |
