Maybe on a spreadsheet, consumers won't touch this thing over an Ipad.

Sorry missed this earlier.

Indeed, it is a categorically worse performer. Compared to an Ipad it has:

- crappy screen resolution (1366x768)
- shorter battery life
- expensive peripheral being marketed as essential (keyboard cover is a jaw dropping $120)
- unproven app store
- No ability to load non-store apps

If you're going to be the underdog then you tend to at least compete on price but surprisingly they are overpricing this. The whole thing from start to finish feels like a dud. I thought maybe they would get lucky with being the "unique" Christmas gift for North America this year but it sounds like Apple is readying the Ipad Mini to take that status and that silly Nintendo system is seeing some surprising preorder demand.

The RT tablets have an OS and Recovery partition that you can't disable, leaving it with just 12GB free to use. More ugh.

Actually, this is incorrect, though I'm not particularly surprised certain people are spinning it to be worse than it is.
The OS/Partition takes up 12GB, leaving you with 20GB, not the other way around.
Though still a negative, it's 8GB more than some people are claiming. This is the main reason it has an SD slot - so you can load movies onto it.

So you get 20GB for apps, but whatever you can fit onto an SD card for other. I'm actually ok with this. 32GB cards are ~20 now, so that offsets any concern for me.

Still not buying it.

I didn't say it was a competent iPad competitor, just that that's the space it's swimming in.

Verno's comment is bad, the resolution is bad (even if they defend it), but other than that I'd say this is more appealing to me than an iPad. If I had to choose, I'm picking this every single time.

Fortunately no one has a gun to my head and I can choose to instead keep those couple hundred bucks.

7. Microsoft Oct 16, 2012, 20:16 Tim Collins

Microsoft is a bunch of idiots, all the people that made Win7 don't work there anymore. Microsoft didn't get it with Ribbon their not gonna get it now, their just idiots, we need to come to grips with this. I swear to god if I see anybody at work with one I will ridicule them and offer them $20 to never bring it to work again. Friends don't let friends buy Surface.

I wouldn't pay $100 for it. There is no way to load regular desktop apps on Win8 RT. I have no desire to be required to go through the Windows store for all my software.

More info here.

Windows 8's shittiness aside, the pricing makes me shake my head in disbelief. It looks to me like the Zune and Windows phone all over again- a solid device that is just way too late to the market that they are asking way too much for. As already stated, it seems unlikely that MS will gain any market penetration at all at those prices at this late stage.

I almost find myself feeling sorry for Microsoft - they are like the smart but underachieving kid who every year comes in second to the flashy genius kid in the science fair.

Yeah, this is their iPad competitor. It can't run regular desktop apps because it doesn't have nearly as much functionality, particularly backwards compatibility.

What you want is the Surface Pro. It's also what I want. Full laptop guts, i5 processor, desktop OS with a tablet UI, full customability... questions remain on price, resolution, battery life and heat. I can't say I'll buy it, but it's getting closer to something I will.

I expected Microsoft to sell those things at a loss to gain some market share, those prices are really disappointing.

1366x768 is a bigger disappointment, personally.
I was planning on looking at the Pro, in truth.

$500 for an RT tablet without a keyboard is asking too much IMHO. I expected Microsoft to sell those things at a loss to gain some market share, those prices are really disappointing.
