But I haven't played much at all, game time has been going to Dishonored. I'm finally digging into Dishonored tonight, only to find I can't go 5 feet w/o alerting someone or having to reload. I'm starting to think a pure stealth playthrough isn't the best introduction, and that maybe I should just kill everything breathing and then go back for stealth on a second playthrough...
The stealth system is different than other games, being in shadows just reduces the range you're detected at, it doesn't make you an invisible ninja. You also make noise which can alert people and guards are not totally worthless like most other games, most are reasonably perceptive. |

Okay, Xcom is just fucking with me now!
I got to the capture stuff stage of the game, so I create two rookies to be my "run in and try to hit that big 600 pound alien with this little taser, okay, buddy?" cannon fodder. I called one Fodder McFodder, and the other Expendable Sacrifice.
Fodder McFodder, in true Xcom fashion, died before he could do shit. A shot from a Thin Man panicked him, and he ran out into the street where a Muton basically ate him.
Rookie Sacrifice, however, was a fucking trooper. Dashing everywhere, having the uncanny ability to have shots miss him, always managing to be 2 steps too far away to be able to rush a monster and stun it in one turn, he was the tits. He stunned a Sectoid, and a Thin Man in the same mission. He stunned TWO MUTONS in the same mission! He has had his ass saved by miraculous overwatch shots at least half a dozen times, shots that literally scraped Mutons and Chrysalisks off his ass. He captures the Outsider too. He promotes and is given the nick Geronimo, which was the most beautifully chosen random nickname ever.
By this point, he's become a LT, and I'm beginning to get a little attached to the guy. He permanently takes over for my Support Major, because, well fuck, Geronimo is awesome. I keep dashing him everywhere (he's now become an Assault class), and he keeps being a major good luck charm. He manages to stun a berserker! Finally, by the time that I've equipped him with Titan armor and a Plasma Rifle, and he has 27 kills, not counting the at least 8 or so stuns he had, I figure it's time to give the poor guy his name back.
So I call him Jack Bauer, because he's a fucking badass!
In the next game, two muton elites and a berserker gang up on him, and murder him...
DAMMIT XCOM!!!!

This wasn't showing up on release day at least for me, maybe someone can try digging and seeing if there's something else coming down the pipe. That's the Elite Soldier preorder bonus, I had that at launch. They might be making it available to everyone. |

Ah fuck, not Singleton! Fuck! I loved his games and played them to death on my Spectrum. Lords of Midnight, Dark Scepter, Doomdark's Revenge and then Midwinter 1 and 2 and Carrier Command on the Amiga.
He was one of the most amazing game developers that ever existed and it's a truly sad day to see him gone.
RIP Mike. It is night and Rorthron the Wise has found shelter. He sleeps. |
