edit: err wait, you don't mean like slashing and killing the rats themselves right? I was talking about using rats to kill a person, specifically ones that were stuck behind a door. |

| I've always been a quicksave masher. You could do it in text adventures so it's been around a while. Doesn't bother me. It extends the life of the game, let's you play all options, and immediately try to improve what you were doing. |

Sir, I'm with the PC Police. I'm going to have to ask you to turn in your keyboard and mouse. And, unfortunately, I'm going to have to tase you. Repeatedly.[/quote uicksaving is like a built-in cheat system and considerably reduces the difficulty of a game. When you're able to save the game freely it destroys the tension, particularly in a game like Dishonored where a small mistake can compromise a stealth-based approach. PC gaming always used to be about the challenge, not bashing F5 just so you don't have to replay the last couple of minutes.
Quicksave systems destroy immersion and take away any consequence for your actiosn. Checkpoints are one alternative, though they're far from perfect themselves. Limited rewind systems like Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time or GRID are an innovative solution to the problem but aren't suited to every game. I think a lot more needs to be done. Far Cry 2 had a good system whereby you could save at special locations, though on the PC they avoided any controversy by implementing quicksave as well.
I'm an avid PC gamer and have been for decades but I reject the notion that PC games have to feature quicksaves. I think it's as ridiculous as the notion that proper PC games have healthpacks, which are just as ludicrous as regenerating health - Far Cry 2 had a very good compromise with segmented health-regen and micro-healthpacks. We need innovation, not stagnation. |

Managing no detection is incredibly difficult on some of the missions so that's definitely one I wouldn't want to try without save scumming.
If your self-imposed rules are more flexible and you're okay with getting into fights, then relying on the autosaves alone is fine. My own rules are pretty flexible about everything except for saving I tried to beat GTA Iv without dying or getting arrested. I was glitched for a few seconds in a car chase and then in handcuffs. I pulled the power cord out of the wall so fast to avoid the auto save. |

Man I am glad I went with normal/ironman for my first playthrough of Xcom. I lost 4 level 2 soldiers last night in a single mission. I think I almost cried.
Only my heavy managed to make it to the evac point. Apparently, when they classify a mission as 'very difficult', they actually mean it!!! |

I mean, they're not my rats, they just happened to get loose. For that matter how are sidequest kills/stats handled in the end chapter/zone total up? No idea on the first one, I wasn't paying much attention. Special tasks are divvied up in their own section in the lower left but as far as I could tell all kills and stuff count towards mission end totals. One of the later missions had an optional quest where you could pick a side between two people and resulted in a death but I don't think it counted towards to the total. Generally speaking though, most deaths will count, accidental or otherwise. As an example, a guard tried to shoot me and accidentally hit one of my mission targets and I was blamed for the kill.
The game is incredibly fun if you don't save scumm it. The game auto-saves on area transitions which are infrequent but usually enough that they essentially act as checkpoint saves. There's currently a bug where if you side with a specific person during a later quest, you'll get a "kill" even if there's no killing involved. Arx is aware of the issue and it's apparently going to be fixed in the next patch.
As for save scumming, it all depends on how you play. If you're going for a true ghost playthrough (no killing/incapacitating anyone) and you're trying to get all the loot and you're playing on the highest difficulty, it's pretty much impossible to get through the game without save scumming. If your self-imposed rules are more flexible and you're okay with getting into fights, then relying on the autosaves alone is fine. |

Ah, that's disappointing - that means it will be incredibly difficult to collect all gold and bonuses. I'm trying a clean playthrough and didn't realise they counted as deaths - I remember just recently knocking out a guard with a sleep dart but him later getting eaten by rats, so I guess I'm going to have to restart. It shouldn't count as a kill unless your actions directly caused their death.
A game like Dishonored really shouldn't include quick-save / regular save as an option but should rely on regular auto-saves. It makes stealth so much more rewarding when you can't save just before something. A great example of that is Metro 2033 - at first the lack of quick-save annoyed me but it made the game so much more rewarding. With Dishonored when I forced myself not to save at all it was so much more tense and more rewarding. In fact now that I remember I'm going to unbind the quicksave button so I don't do it instinctively.

I understand your points - I, for one, have been rigorous about not reloading my XCOM game, even to save lives, but...
It's in the regs. I don't make the rules, I just tase people.

I added up the hours from my Steam account. 370 for Deus Ex and JC2. I played through hitman twice, so figure that's another 20. And I played SupCom 2 through twice, so that's about another 30 or so. The whole pack's probably good for 500 hours.
