| So lots of folks talking positively about this game. From the demo, I just didn't see it, got bored even before completing the first mission where you can actually choose where to put people. The voiceovers, terrible FMV etc do not help either. Is the demo a reasonable reflection of the game? |

As has already been mentioned, a lot of your income is going to come from satellites. Every time you deploy one over a new country, your monthly income goes up. What I do now is wait until about 5 days before I have the council meeting, and check the unrest levels. If any country is going to leave, they get a satellite. Otherwise, I throw a satellite at the country(ies) that will pay the most and give the best scientist/engineer bonuses. Deploying satellites before you need them is actually a bad idea. Build them, have them ready, but no need to use them (with the caveat that they take a few days to deploy to the country, so you can't wait until the last minute - you get the unrest reduction immediately, but not the money).
Also, do not deploy satellites to any geographic region to which you are not going to build interceptors. All that'll do is allow detection of a UFO that you can't shoot down - and not shooting them down will often increase unrest. If you can't afford to buy new interceptors for a region, assign your satellite to a region you've already got covered. |

Hmm it looks like Im going to have to research that arc thrower ASAP. Been kind of researching my own thing cos I dont want the story to advance.
Question for those in the knowhow: Assault troops with shotgun or Assault troops with laser rifle? Which is better? I love my assault troopers, I go with two every mission, they are like ninjas who can take a beating. I also dig the nicknames troopers 'earn', one of my assaulties handles is 'Hardcore'...sweet

I guess it's possible, but I know fuck-all about such things. Witcher 2 had this problem on Steam. Everything bundled up into one huge pak file of sorts. The first couple of Steam patches basically amounted to redownloading the entire 15GB game, whereas the standalone patch for the GoG version was just a couple of megs. |

1. It looks like countries don't leave xcom funding until the end of the month, so if you have the opportunity, use your satellite before the end of the month. This is great. I've had so many countries leave xcom because I couldn't get satellites up fast enough - I eventually started over. I'll still have that issue but this will slow it down. I assume there's no "perfect game" where you can prevent all countries from dropping before the end.
Edit: They also changed the default QuickSave key from F12 to F10. Now I won't take a screenshot every time I quick save

I tried getting to the third or fourth month without even having built an Arc Thrower or Alien Containment yet and all of a sudden 6 countries pulled out at once! I think you can do it, but at least get containment and arc thrower. I've been doing something similar, but I got those early since I knew capping live aliens is important
I also suggest getting a 2nd satellite and ship or 2 in another continent ASAP. Thats mostly how you increase money, by the sats. Which also means it works out ok only being able to have one base, since you can have interceptors and sats in each continent. Yeah I figured out that you need to build satellites and uplinks and be able to defend them the hard way. Which means I am basically forgoing researching any soldier equipment in my current game. It sure is gonna suck when I start taking on Mutons and Cyberdiscs with standard XCOM equipment!
X-COM has always been a game I don't mind losing at. I'm on my sixth game now and don't expect to win it either... but boy am I having a blast! More good stuff:
1. It looks like countries don't leave xcom funding until the end of the month, so if you have the opportunity, use your satellite before the end of the month.
2. You can't sell anything you build, so don't build more than you need. Seriously. When you assemble your squad to go on a mission, look at what they have/need. If you need an upgrade, buy it for them, but never buy ahead of time. There's no point.
3. Stacking up satellite facilities gives you a bonus satellite.
4. Workshops bring the cost of satellites down to 65 creds. Well worth it.
5. Highest panic nations get satellites. Why? Because it reduces panic.
6. There will come a point in the game where you assault an enemy base. If it works, panic worldwide is eliminated. It's a big game-changer.
7. Aside from the plot interrogations, capping live beasties tends to give you 50% credit towards some tech or another. My first plasma research was done in like 4 days because of an interrogation.
8. Have I said how awesome squad sight is? It really is. If you can get your sniper into a good position he basically will mother hen the entire map. Escort missions usually become pieces of cake with him on overwatch, capping everything as it spawns. The only thing to worry about at that point is floaters, who can warp all over the map.
I'm assaulting my first large UFO right now and it's tense. I hate those goddamn chrysalids. Right now the main thing that saves me is the reaction ability that gives me a free reaction attack if an enemy gets within 4 squares of me.
One of the months I was playing I netted over a thousand credits, right around the time my sniper max'd out. I moseyed over and bought most of the Officer upgrades, including some really wicked ones that advance every new recruit to squaddie. They're still tissue paper, but at least they're *armed* tissue paper. |

However, I'm doing my first run through on normal - after a day of ironmode classic frustration - just to understand how eveything works. I think anyone going in classic ironman from the getgo is nuts. even just on normal it's still a bitch. |

I wonder if they patched out the bug where the death cam shows your trooper losing their hair when they're blown off their feet and die? Not sure if it is a Nvidia thing or the game... but it is funny. They get hit so hard they're killed and their hair is knocked off the top of their heads. It reappears again in a few seconds but it still takes away from the full effect of you losing a soldier you're attached too.
edit: Has anyone else had the patch screw up their saved games? The game no-longer knows what order the patches are suppose to be in. I know it was just past midnight when I finally had to stop from saying just one more mission. So this evening I just tried to boot the game, had to let it patch, and came here to see the nightly news. After I noticed the patch had been finished I booted up the game and noticed the save it loaded was not the mission I was on when I finally threw in the towel this morning....

It makes an obscene difference. Basically it worked in overwatch but not as an active turn. Now, it basically removes the range limitations entirely from your sniper. As long as he has LOS, he can shoot it. Awesome. That's the way it should be.
Beelzebud wrote on Oct 11, 2012, 21:57: The mouse fix is really great. I had gotten used to the mushy controls, but this fix made the game play 100% better IMO. Yeah that I did notice before I reluctantly quit to go to work (ah to be independently wealthy and be able to stay home and game...); the mouse control is majorly improved.
I like that Firaxis has already started patching, though I hope that if they patch frequently it won't always be a 2GB download. Creston might blow a gasket! I'm on a 25GB business class connection and had it in about 10 minutes, so it didn't bother me but admittedly for a patch with this few fixes 2GB seems a tad excessive. |

I just finally finished my first terror mission thanks to him. I sat him up on a good vantage point and blew the living f*ck out of the chrysalids. Every turn he'd cap either someone on his turn or during overwatch. He racked up like 6 kills alone and is now my highest ranking officer. ..and here I thought there was no way that skill would work as advertised, so I skipped it. lol |
