Out of the Blue

Happy 10/11/12! Unless you're in Europe, where it's 11/10/12, and you must wait until next month to experience the sheer, unadulterated awesomeness of this date.

Last week's NFL games were more true to form, judging by our general success at picking winners, and Creston and I tied for top honors. Here goes for this week: Steelers, Falcons, Ravens, Bengals, Dolphins, Colts, Eagles, Chiefs, Cardinals, Seahawks, Giants, Vikings, Texans, Broncos. Here are the outcomes from last week: Blue & Creston: 11-3, Batman and Jivaro: 10-4, mag: 8-6, and Cutter: 6-8.

Well, I did think it was an interesting role for Albert Brooks, although he may have played roles like that before, I don't recall one. And you are right, their final scene together is a good one.

You are also right about it not having a story. Not many people would consider that a plus. We don't learn anything about where Gosling comes from, or what he wants to do. He's a wheel man for crooks. No, he is a stunt driver. No, he is a mechanic. No, he's an aspiring race car driver. And I thought the toothpick was out of place for a guy who was presented as being meticulous about whatever he did.

But, whatever. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Thanks for telling me your perspective.

Maybe I overlooked it, what do you think makes it great?

Cinematography, score, and the way it handled violence. After the fantastic opening the movie was a massive slow burn. Bryan Cranston and Albert Brooks were great, especially the final scene between them.

It was also extremely nice not having in-your-face exposition... they didn't even bother telling us Gosling's name, he was just "the driver". The movie was a ride, not a story, just like the name implied.

Go watch Fracture, a really average Hollywood effort brought up by both Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. I always view a good actor as someone whose performance can elevate a mediocre script and Ryan Gosling can pull that off. Drive was a great movie BTW, just probably not what you were expecting.
The trailer for Fracture looks interesting, I added it to my Netflix queue.

I watch all kinds of movies, thrillers, comedies, dramas, horror, musicals, sci-fi, everything. I wasn't expecting anything, certainly tastes and opinions differ, but I don't see anything "great" in Drive. Is it bad? No. It's just average. Maybe I overlooked it, what do you think makes it great? The acting, the screen play, the character development, the action scenes? Like I said, it gets bonus points for not having a typical happy Hollywood ending, but that's about it in my book -- flat average, 2.5-3.0 stars out of 5.

Ok, I tried searching for the topic, but couldn't find it. Whoever it was that thought "Drive" was a good movie -- you are off my list as a movie appraiser. Although it does get points for not having a Hollywood ending.

I was really scratching my head on that one. Everyone raved about it, including Goslings "acting" but it felt like he was basically staring into space and couldn't remember his next line...def one of the bigger disappointments I've seen in awhile.

15. DHS to start testing drones over US for 'public safety'. Oct 11, 2012, 17:20 jdreyer

Run by Skynet no doubt.

It's a shame they don't need a warrant for that kind of thing. This seems way over the top and unnecessary, IMO.

Yeah, but you'll have so much fun making that new DNA that you'll forget all about HL3. Blush

I posted my picks in yesterday's OOTB.

Seeing Jimmy Johnson in that video is....horrid.

Welp, I said I was going to rake some risks. I pretty much new I was going to get killed after the Cards went down. I knew most of my picks were long shots but I felt we were due for a week of upsets. Turns out I was wrong and this is why people make safe picks.

Ok, let's get back to form...

Steelers, Ravens, Rams, Eagles, Bengals, Colts, Bucs, Falcons, Pats, Cards, Vikes, 49ers, Packers, Chargers.

Edit: Of course, now I've tempted fate and *this* will be the week of upsets no doubt, haha!

Aw, I was kind of looking forward to the Munster's reboot and seeing Brian Fuller's twist on it.

That was the one that also had Eddie Izzard, wasn't it? I would have checked it out for that...

Aw, I was kind of looking forward to the Munster's reboot and seeing Brian Fuller's twist on it. I loved Pushing Daisies. Now it turns out it won't be a series after all. Maybe when I see the pilot they're airing I'll know why.

I went 11-3? Holy nutballs, I must have picked way different than I thought I did. I thought I'd gone 4-12 or something when I was watching the scores.

Picks for this week: Steelers, Falcons, Bengals, Rams, Colts, Eagles, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, Cardinals, 49'ers (sorry Blue), Vikings, Texans, and finally the CUT-THAT-MEAT boys!

Btw, last night's baseball games were SO FUCKING AWESOOOOMME.

"DNA has a 521-year half-life." New DNA string created today will have degraded before HL3 comes out.

Edit: Made one pick change. Somehow I accidentally typed "browns" in there... That team seems to be a lock to go 0-16...

12.12.12 is so much more awesomenes...

That's when the world ends...or Blue does a kickstarter to revamp the site. Whichever comes first.
