Funny, I'd say DE:HR was one of the best games ever made.

OK, look--time to get serious. Everyone knows that the best game ever made was Might & Magic VI. Right? Right. 'Cause I'm like playing it through right now again for probably the 10th time...;)

Just thought we should should clear the air about this...M&M VI has yet to be surpassed. Tarzan and the Tree Monkeys from Mt. Doom came close--but no cigar.

I don't care if there were more industry reviews praising Dishonored/XCOM then there are guns in Borderlands 1 and 2 combined.

I will await from the mass of user reviews and go from there. That is what the industry has told those that pay attention to do. Both are SP games, so buying a few days in means nothing in terms of "falling behind".

To me the industry has brought this on themselves and you a foo if you don't adjust your habits if gaming $$$ is an issue for you.

A game Bethesda has been marketing non-stop with millions of dollars getting a bucket load of positive reviews? OMG, never!

ZOMG THIS IS THE BESTEREST GAME EVERY IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF GAMES IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!!!!11111ONEONEONE

Joking aside, I already had this preordered (with Steam key delivered today!) from GMG.

I was kind of hoping it would knock it out of the park and hit the 90+ range, but I can live with a strong 85+. I have enjoyed all of Arkane's releases to date, I love what I can see of the Thief/Bioshock/Deus Ex gameplay, and this appears to be a game that I will really get into.
This may be the new Thief since Eidos wants to "fix" the series.
Hoping the developer sees a significant reward from making the game,
Ray

This is simply not true. That's what I've been saying and what, honestly, you guys should already know.

Game reviews indicate that game reviewers like the game. That's all they indicate. Actually, in rare cases they don't even indicate that (when the journalist is forced to post a good review via management/publisher pressure).

I'm not telling anybody not to buy the game. I'm pointing out that these reviews are completely meaningless, as they always are.

Not necessarily. There are 3 or 4 reviewers with whom I share a common set of gaming "values"; that is to say that we have similar tastes, preferences and petpeeves. When one of these reviewers reviews a game their opinion counts far more heavily than a reviewer who I am not familiar with. Rather than just dismissing all reviews as useless I would recommend finding reviewers who you trust and have similar gaming tastes. I think it would be better to spend time figuring out which reviewers are like you rather than being an obnoxious ass to random people on an Internet forum.

@NIN Thanks again for the BL2 Golden Keys this weekend man!

No problem! Anytime one came up, I was pinging anyone in the steam friends list who was online. I managed to snag all 5 this weekend, so I'm up to 9...getting harder and harder to wait until 50 to use them.

I found out I could use IFTTT.com (if this then that) to send me a text to my google voice whenever they post a shift code to twitter. It could also be configured to send an email, or whatever. I have no idea how many I've missed (its been a lot since I've gotten ZERO from that), but never again.
Edit: If you do this, you have to use the RSS feed to trigger from.

Guys, do you ever learn?

Of course the game is getting rave reviews. It's exactly the type of game that does so: one that pays lip service to classic games while still making the game, ahem, streamlined enough for journalists to understand and finish it. Deus Ex: HR being a recent example.

Now that I'm over 40 with kids, I see nothing wrong with that. However, being over 40 with kids means I'm not going to pay $60 for it either. Putting it on my buy-a-year-from-now-after-I-finish-Skyrim-and-BL2-and-Black-Mesa-and-DE:HR list.

From your content-less responses, we can agree that you have nothing substantial to say on the matter. So, go ahead and snap up your $60 game because some guy on the internet told you to.

The game reviews are indicating a high level of quality, the people here are already interested in the game, and they might not see $60 as a huge investment. Why shouldn't they buy the game?

To be fair, they gave Diablo 3 stellar reviews too and I found that to quickly deteriorate into a pile of dog crap.

I wouldn't say they're completely meaningless. It really depends on the reviewer, like our own JaguarUSF (sadly retired) who take their time and discuss the positive aspects and flaws of a game.

Also, I like to use metacritic and professional written reviews as a beginning not as an end. If I see a good review, then I'll go check out some podcasts: QuarterTo3, 3movesahead, GamerswithJobs, or even PCGamer. With several different people discussing the gameplay, asking questions, etc. I can get a good idea of whether or not I'll like it. Podcasts are unscripted, and often the participants have had a couple of beers and don't pull their punches. If you hype a crappy game, you'll get your ass handed to you by the other members. It's much more open and honest, and there's no "score" at the end, just discussion.

It really surprises me that it's not higher in Steam's sales list. I wonder if a large number of Steam customers now just buy through GMG and thus aren't counted in the list.

Creston

I'd blame it on how little information there has been about the game, compared to other games coming out on the same day (XCOM), and a crowded market with BL2, TL2, and the WoW expansion.

Anything's possible, but I wouldn't say there's been "little information." Their marketing campaign has been pretty all-encompassing, and they've had quite a lot of previews on most of the major sites.

I guess there really aren't that many fans of the Thief-type gameplay...

Creston

Well, RPS had a three part interview and multiple discussions and articles about XCOM. They reposted a couple developer diaries and trailers for Dishonored.

I'm having waaaaaaaaaay too much playing GW2 to try anything else right now, and had honestly forgotten about this title. Plus, uh, Harvey Smith. But when Metacritic and (especially) Kotaku both light up like this, you have to at least take notice. Sounds like it's pretty great.

Can't wait for this game to come in today. Been looking forward to it. Now to fit it in between GW2 and BL2, all while tryign to finish some of the single players so I have time for the rest of the games coming out this month. And next month. Stupid publishers all putting them out at the same time.

On another note, claiming your opinion is fact, but another person is being disingenuous for giving his opinion? Classic.

I know what you mean. Part of the problem is that it looks like the skills a) slow down the game, and b) are gimmicky and unbalanced (like the 'possess rat' power). Still, I considered it to be worth a gamble because of the discount - I wasn't interested paying full price.
