The Elder Sculls? O.o
This is NOT the RPG. It's actually a rowing simulator for sculls that were developed no later than the 1970s.

Nah, that's cheating I'll get stuff done before it's released as I know I'll get behind once I start playing it. Plus I still have a way to go in Apocalypse, so that'll also keep me distracted.

I hold games in very high regard that i cannot beat at first. In fact, it only makes me 10x more excited when i lose at the thought of the challenge and non hand holding that most gaming has turned into.

Yes i'm quite excited at the prospect of naming my soldiers after friends and family and watching them die horrible deaths with no chance to reload :).....errr wait that didnt sound right....but yes i'm excited for it muahhahahah!

@ J, hop on a US based VPN/proxy and it will unlock on the 9th, you can also preload that way. I'm in germany and thats what i did. Although i still have a US based bank card so thats also how i bought it via steam, but i think it should still work.

Has Cutter exploded yet?

I have to wait until the 12th. I may need to minimize this window in the interim. I've been burying my head in X-Com Apocalypse. I still love it.

Excited about this! I "got in the mood" by watching Prometheus (which I actually enjoyed) and Alien tonight. Aliens is tomorrow night followed by the unlocking.

I think I'll do Classic difficulty without Ironman mode. Terror from the Deep was my first XCOM and I hear it is regarded as the more difficult of the two real XCOM games so it's OK if I fail on the first playthrough, I'm used to it. I think I'll go with US for base for old times sake.

I've been watching an LP series lately to take me back to when I'd lose hours upon hours in these games and I have to say, the original games involved a LOT of tedium, from fiddling with action points to lots of repetitive click dragging in the inventory system. I think the new systems are superior here, and I just LOVE the cinematic camera when actions are played out. The old games didn't do much to tie you to your soldiers other than the few times they would pull off something heroic, or downright stupid... the new game excels here too. It seems like it's very much classic XCOM, just refined and exactly what a 21st century XCOM should be.

Now... let's just see those mod tools... AVP mod anyone?

It's not just third-party publishers who do regional pricing and restrictions with Steam. Valve also does it with its own games. See here and here for two examples.

Basically its dictated by contractual issues with 2k. They figured out a way to get around it by offering store credit, which they didn't have to do.

Just like regional pricing on steam isn't because of steam wanting to screw people, its because of publishers setting it that way.

Explanation or no, it still doesn't make sense to me (the not being able to use the voucher). It seems to be setting a precedent for publishers saying NO, GREEN MAN, YOU CANNOT OFFER OUR GAME FOR SUCH LUDICROUS PRICES. There's no way that all publishers have previously said "sure, an extra 30% off on top of the usual 10% pre-order discount is okay with us," which leads me to believe they can set their prices freely. AFAIK, they purchase a lot of game keys and then turn around and sell them at whatever margin they damn well please. What makes 2K so special that GMG would accept such a deal?

Pretty much the entire reason they've been successful is that they sell brand new games for so cheap; if they lose that they have nothing. Well, a decent selection of older games and indies with the unique ability to trade them back in, but that didn't get them very far in the past. The bulk of their business is game keys for Steam or Origin, etc. Nobody I know who shops there actually uses Capsule.

It does seem a bit odd that publishers would allow them to offer such significant discounts on pre-orders. That said, I'm not sure how digital distribution works. Do the distribution services buy a batch of keys upfront, with no further money going to publishers? Or do publishers offer keys as needed and take a cut of each sale? I was under impression that the latter was how digital distribution works.

Classic Ironman is where I'll be headed as well. It's been too long since there were good games that made you stare defeat in the face with no chance of a do-over.

The $10 credit for XCOM on GMG is for the NA version only, because for some reason they aren't allowed to allow us to use the 25% off voucher for this specific region. Boggles my mind, especially since that credit is being extended to ALL pre-orders, including those who bought it during the trade-in special a few weeks ago that already got a price of $32-38, depending on whether it had a base 20% or 10% off.

I wish they'd be a bit more consistent with their pre-order offers, I don't want to have to worry about exactly *when* I place my order so that I am able to get the best deal. Their policy usually is "you get the price you got at the time," even if it was an error on their part (initially they listed BL2 for $50). Though they do allow people to cancel, and then place it again... Makes no sense.

@briktal, as for 1 thru 3, where did you get the info from? I was going to start off normal too but now I wonder if I should just go Classic without the Ironman. I guess I could always be a wimp and start off Normal for the 1st play-thru, then Classic for the 2nd, and finally turn on the Ironman for the 3rd.

It's from the gameinformer interview with lead designer Jake Solomon (!spoiler warning! - they talk about a specific set piece mission, and contains concept art of advanced tech.)

Normal is going to be too easy for any X-COM vet.

And now it looks like I'll be starting Classic Ironman. I'm blaming you when I fail miserably.

1) That is a good looking top 10! Gaming's not dead and we're in the middle of a purple patch!

2) I will hang fire and see what you guys make of XCOM, I want it to be great but can't tell from what's out there so far.

3) In TL2 I just lost my level 34 HC Ember Mage, using a build based around using Shockbolts once I hit 35! Veryangry The Djinni's Arena was like three times harder than anything before it for a glass cannon...

I was thinking the same thing, except I'll be starting on Normal Ironman. I want to play at least 1 game to get a feel for the mechanics before I dive into Classic.

I'm going with Classic (dunno about Ironman) because the gameplay is a little different between normal and classic and I don't want to get used to the normal stuff. The three main changes I know of are:

1) Some aliens have more health, which changes things up because of what is required to kill them. For example, Thin Men have 4 health instead of 3, meaning a basic grenade can't kill them on classic.

2) Your base starts with less stuff on classic.

3) There's a limit on the number of aliens that will engage you on normal, potentially resulting in enemies retreating from combat if there are too many other aliens around.

Also, as far as Dishonored goes, I know nothing about that game. There have been all kinds of previews and gameplay videos and interviews about XCOM, but almost nothing about Dishonored.

In the late 1990's X-Com was anything but a niche game. The first time I played it was on a Playstation console. It is one of the greatest strategy games ever made. It was on multiple platforms, sold well, and won praise from every sector of the gaming press.

Yeah ok. Mechwarrior wasn't niche either I suppose. lol feel free to keep rewriting history, not like I give a fuck, I just think it's funny.

If we're going to be honest about 90's computer gaming, the entire industry was a niche.

heh well that much is obvious for sure. Still....

I don't get the hostility. I still have the PS1 version that I played way back then. It was hard to get even back then...
